{"id":542623,"date":"2010-04-24T17:27:22","date_gmt":"2010-04-24T21:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.jwatch.org\/hiv-id-observations\/?p=898"},"modified":"2010-04-24T17:27:22","modified_gmt":"2010-04-24T21:27:22","slug":"choosing-an-official-state%c2%a0microbe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/542623","title":{"rendered":"Choosing an Official State\u00a0Microbe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-900\" title=\"cheesehead\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.jwatch.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cheesehead.jpg\" alt=\"cheesehead\" width=\"180\" height=\"276\" \/>Wisconsin has selected <em>Lactococcus lactis<\/em> as its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.wi.us\/2009\/data\/AB-556.pdf\" >official state microbe<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do\u00a0enact as follows: \u00a0SECTION 1. 1.10 (3) (t) of the statutes is created to read:\u00a01.10 (3) (t) The bacterium Lactococcus lactis is the state microbe.\u00a0SECTION 2. 1.10 (4) of the statutes is amended to read:\u00a01.10 (4) The Wisconsin Blue Book shall include the information contained in\u00a0this section concerning the state song, ballad, waltz, dance, beverage, tree, grain,\u00a0flower, bird, fish, animal, domestic animal, wildlife animal, dog, insect, fossil,\u00a0mineral, rock, soil, fruit, and tartan, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and microbe.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>As any self-respecting Packer fan could tell you,\u00a0<em>Lactococcus lactis <\/em>is a critical part of making cheese, in particular the state&#8217;s famous cheddar.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>And though the bill passed last week, I have three remaining very important questions:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>What were the other contenders? <\/strong> When I think Wisconsin and microbes (which I do several times a day), probably the first bug that occurs to me is <em>Borrelia burgdorferi <\/em>(Wisconsin is a\u00a0notable non-New England\/Mid-Atlantic epicenter for Lyme Disease), followed shortly thereafter by\u00a0<em>Diphyllobothrium latum <\/em>(think various <a href=\"http:\/\/russianreport.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/pickled-herring-with-onions.jpg\" >marinated and uncooked fish<\/a> popular in northern European diets).\u00a0 Did these get any votes?<\/li>\n<li><strong>What will Massachusetts choose? <\/strong>I could see <em>Erysipelothrix<\/em> <em>rhusiopathiae, <\/em>though perhaps Maine has a stronger claim to this lobster-related bacterium than we do &#8212; we&#8217;d better have a back-up in place, such as <em>Babesia microti<\/em> or <em>Cyclospora cayetanensis<\/em>, though for the latter the <a href=\"http:\/\/archinte.ama-assn.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/158\/10\/1121\" >reference might be a bit obscure<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Will other states go for the obvious choices?
