{"id":544468,"date":"2010-04-27T10:22:08","date_gmt":"2010-04-27T14:22:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/?p=23680"},"modified":"2010-04-27T10:22:08","modified_gmt":"2010-04-27T14:22:08","slug":"big-oil-is-awash-in-big-profits-%e2%80%94-while-gulf-of-mexico-is-awash-in-spilled-oil-oil-company-profits-underscore-need-for-reform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/544468","title":{"rendered":"Big Oil is awash in big profits \u2014 while Gulf of Mexico is awash in spilled oil &#8211; Oil company profits underscore need for reform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bp.com\/extendedgenericarticle.do?categoryId=2012968&amp;contentId=7061409\">BP just announced  first quarter profits of $5.6 billion, a 135% increase<\/a> over the  first quarter of 2009.\u00a0\u00a0 This profit was 50% higher than  predicted by the <em>Financial Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>BP owns the oil rig that sunk in the  Gulf of Mexico last week, with 11 employees still unaccounted for and  presumed dead.\u00a0 It is also <a href=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/2010\/04\/26\/energy-and-environmental-news-for-april-25th-2010-bps-42000-gallon-a-day-oil-spill-now-covers-over-1800-square-miles-questions-continue-over-cape-wind-farm\/\">leaking  42,000 gallons of oil per day<\/a>.\u00a0 This growing oil slick is expected  to hit Louisiana\u2019s fragile coast on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>CAP&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/aboutus\/staff\/WeissDaniel.html\">Daniel J. Weiss<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/aboutus\/staff\/LyonSusan.html\">Susan Lyon<\/a> have the whole story on Big Oil&#8217;s big profits in this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/2010\/04\/big_profits.html\">repost<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-23680\"><\/span>The big five oil companies\u2014BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, and Shell\u2014are poised to report their first quarter profits this week. And it should surprise no one that rising oil and gasoline prices will lead to higher profits compared to 2009. A research note from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSLDE63L0JL20100422?type=marketsNews\">Citigroup<\/a> determined that, \u201cThe year-on-year increase largely reflects the strength of crude oil prices.\u201d <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/newsbysector\/energy\/oilandgas\/7629535\/Rig-blast-shadows-rise-in-BP-profits.html\">The Telegraph<\/a><\/em> made the same assessment, saying, \u201cenergy companies are benefiting from higher oil prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tonto.eia.doe.gov\/dnav\/pet\/pet_pri_gnd_dcus_nus_w.htm\">Gasoline prices increased by nearly 3 percent<\/a> during the first quarter, while <a href=\"http:\/\/tonto.eia.doe.gov\/dnav\/pet\/pet_cons_wpsup_k_w.htm\">gasoline consumption was up 4 percent<\/a>. American consumers spent $65 million more on gasoline during the last week of the quarter compared to the first week. This is a 6 percent increase in total spending between the first and last week. Opponents of reform will claim that such legislation would increase prices. But the reality is that the status quo policies have already harmed American families. An analysis of household energy spending between 2002 and 2007\u2014the nonrecession years\u2014found that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/2009\/04\/bushs_broken_energy_system.html\">average household spent $1,130 more on energy in 2007<\/a>. Nearly 85 percent of this increase was due to the rise in gasoline prices.<\/p>\n<p>The first quarter oil company profits and consumption data suggest that profits will continue to rise absent bipartisan, comprehensive clean energy legislation that reduces oil dependence, creates jobs, and cuts pollution.
