In New York, a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalonews.com\/2010\/04\/26\/1031212\/research-doesnt-support-goal-of.html\">Big Apple physician penned an editorial against the Governor&rsquo;s proposed soft drink tax<\/a>, writing that there&rsquo;s no authoritative science to back up its promised health benefits (something&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/consumerfreedom.com\/issuepage.cfm\/topic\/20\">we&rsquo;ve been saying for a good long while<\/a>).&nbsp; Elsewhere in the Empire State, a soda &ldquo;buyback&rdquo; in the Bronx patterned after a similar firearm-reduction initiative&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.villagevoice.com\/runninscared\/archives\/2010\/04\/bronx_soda_buyb.php\">netted just&nbsp;<em>one<\/em>&nbsp;bottle of soda<\/a>&mdash;and it was a&nbsp;<em>zero-calorie<\/em>&nbsp;drink, which wouldn&rsquo;t fall under the scope of the tax, anyway. Likely, most people who aren&#39;t&nbsp;anti-soda crusaders understand that the implicit comparison of sugary drinks to guns doesn&rsquo;t hold any water.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFarther south, city councilmen in Philadelphia have soured on the mayor&rsquo;s proposed 2-cents-per-ounce drink tax. &ldquo;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/news\/politics\/20100425_Council_sours_on_sweet-drink_tax__trash_fee.html\">It&#39;s fair to say it&#39;s dead<\/a>,&rdquo; says Councilman Frank Rizzo, a sentiment that five other sources also confirmed for the&nbsp;<em>Philadelphia Inquirer<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAll of this left &ldquo;Twinkie tax&rdquo; inventor and soda tax shill&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/activistcash.com\/biography.cfm\/b\/1289-kelly-brownell\">Kelly Brownell<\/a>&nbsp;to beg Philly politicians to impose&nbsp;<em>some<\/em>&nbsp;kind of tax. &ldquo;There is room to compromise and still get considerable health benefits,&rdquo; he pleaded.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt seems to us that these two local&nbsp;governments have caught onto the fact that&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfreedom.com\/news_detail.cfm\/h\/4092-massachusetts-soda-tax-is-bad-science-and-bad-politics\">soft drink taxes aren&rsquo;t about health<\/a>&mdash;they&rsquo;re about&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfreedom.com\/news_detail.cfm\/h\/4144-ny-health-commissioner-is-all-about-the-benjamins\">filling bureaucrats&rsquo; coffers<\/a>&nbsp;while &ldquo;public health&rdquo; activists like Brownell use Americans as experimental guinea pigs.
