{"id":545529,"date":"2010-04-27T18:13:18","date_gmt":"2010-04-27T22:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-04-27-14-buildings-compete-to-be-the-biggest-energy-loser\/"},"modified":"2010-04-27T18:13:18","modified_gmt":"2010-04-27T22:13:18","slug":"14-buildings-compete-to-be-the-biggest-loser-of-energy-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/545529","title":{"rendered":"14 buildings compete to be the Biggest Loser (of energy waste)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tby Jonathan Hiskes <\/p>\n<p>The EPA draws<br \/>\ninspiration from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbc.com\/the-biggest-loser\/\">The Biggest Loser<\/a> in a new competition that pits 14 buildings<br \/>\nagainst each other to see which can trim its energy usage the most.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/index.cfm?fuseaction=buildingcontest.index\">National<br \/>\nBuilding Competition<\/a> is explicitly modeled after the weight-loss reality TV<br \/>\nshow, spotlighting structures that include a 23-story Manhattan office<br \/>\nbuilding, a San Diego Marriott hotel, a Colorado elementary school, and a Chapel<br \/>\nHill, N.C., dormitory. The 200 applicants were required to use a host of energy-efficiency tools from the EPA and Department of Energy. The 14 contestants are having their energy use measured from September 2009 through this August.
