mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: normal; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\"><br \/>The film, \u201cFeathered Cocaine,\u201d began as a simple documentary of the illicit trade in hunting falcons to <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Middle East<\/st1:place> desert sheikhs. But as filmmakers Thorkell (Keli) Hardarson and \u00d6rn Marino Arnarson delved deeper into their subject, they discovered a dark underworld in which terrorism and falcon smuggling met with astonishing regularity.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2008, the filmmakers ventured into <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Afghanistan<\/st1:country-region> and the former Soviet republics along with Alan Parrot, the head of the <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Union<\/st1:place> for the Conservation of Raptors, a conservationist group that seeks to protect wild falcons, to interview a falcon smuggler they code-named \u201cT-2.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: normal; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\"><br \/>For three days, the team waited in a mountain village while the smuggler kept them under surveillance from afar. Satisfied that they hadn\u2019t been followed, he granted them a 55-minute interview \u2014 only if they agreed to disguise his voice and his appearance.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: normal; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\"><br \/>\u201cHe was suspicious of the cameras \u2013 probably because he had seen too many movies about the CIA and was afraid we might be able to identify him,\u201d Hardason told Newsmax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cT-2\u201d told the filmmakers that he met bin Laden by chance in late November 2004 at a falcon-hunting camp in northeastern <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Iran<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: normal; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\"><br \/>\u201cI met him five times after 2004,\u201d he said. \u201cThe last time we met was in October 2007. mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: normal; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\"><br \/>\u201cI believe that bin Laden wanted \u2018T-2\u2019 to send a message through us,\u201d Parrot said. \u201cHe wanted the world to know that he was in <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Iran<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, but that he couldn\u2019t leave.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt; Parrot began breeding falcons and selling them to the ping of Saudi Arabia and then to the president of the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) in the late 1970s, and was a frequent guest at their royal palaces and elaborate hunting camps in the wilds of southern Afghanistan.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: normal; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\"><br \/>In the late 1990s, so was renegade Saudi financier Osama bin Laden. Parrot described the royal hunting camps \u201cal-Qaida\u2019s board room,\u201d because they gave bin Laden the opportunity to spend weeks of quality time with wealthy backers from the U.A.E. and other <st1:state w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">gulf states<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 12.0pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; letter-spacing: 0pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: normal; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\"><br \/>Parrot alleges that bin Laden\u2019s royal backers transferred \u201chundreds of millions of dollars\u201d in cash to him during these hunting expeditions, as well as military equipment and off-road vehicles. The movie includes footage of a U.A.E. military C-130 transport plane landing at a makeshift airstrip in western <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Pakistan<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> to deliver equipment to the hunting camps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see bin Laden as a falcon smuggler,\u201d Parrot states in the film, \u201cand in that capacity I went after him. All the locals in <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Kandahar<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> hated bin Laden because he stole all the falcons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After al-Qaida blew up two <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region> embassies in <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Africa<\/st1:place> in July 1998, the CIA also began hunting for bin Laden in earnest.
