While chatting, she proceeded to get a little crazy with <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 278px; HEIGHT: 354px\" height=\"354\" hspace=\"10\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.usa.gov\/roller\/govgab\/resource\/images\/salt%20shaker.jpg\" width=\"278\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"10\" border=\"0\" \/>the salt shaker. I looked at her like she was nuts, &quot;Care&nbsp;to have&nbsp;some chips with your salt?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>While I rarely ADD additional salt to my food, most of what we buy is already loaded with it. This is why the Institute of Medicine has recommended that the FDA <a title=\"cut back\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/news\/fullstory_97826.html\">take measures to cut back<\/a> the levels of salt that manufacturers add to foods. <\/p>\n<p>While no official plan is in tact, the <a title=\"FDA\" href=\"http:\/\/answers.usa.gov\/cgi-bin\/gsa_ict.cfg\/php\/enduser\/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4319&amp;p_created=1107556532&amp;p\">FDA <\/a>says it plans to slowly but surely reduce the amount of sodium in foods by using a stepwise and monitored process as to not drastically change the flavoring of the food. <\/p>\n<p>The recommended maximum daily intake of sodium for the average adult is about a tablespoon, or 2,300 milligrams. Americans consume about 3,400 milligrams per day.<\/p>\n<p>This over-consumption is a leading contributor to <a title=\"hypertension\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pueblo.gsa.gov\/cic_text\/health\/hbp\/hypertension.htm\">hypertension<\/a> and <a title=\"heart disease\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pueblo.gsa.gov\/cic_text\/health\/heartdisease\/heart.htm\">heart disease<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>What do you think about reducing sodium in packaged foods and restaurants?
