{"id":546147,"date":"2010-04-28T15:14:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-28T19:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/ecogeek\/1361\/japan-s-solar-spacecraft-ready-to-launch.html"},"modified":"2010-04-28T15:14:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-28T19:14:00","slug":"japans-solar-spacecraft-ready-to-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/546147","title":{"rendered":"Japan&#8217;s solar spacecraft ready to launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"japan-solar-sail\" height=\"183\" src=\"http:\/\/l.yimg.com\/a\/feeds\/us\/grn\/green_ecogeek\/japan-solar-sail.jpg\" width=\"468\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s solar sail-powered &#8220;space yacht&#8221; is all set to launch on May 18.\u00a0 Ikaros (Interplanetary Kite-Craft Accelerated by Radiation of the Sun) will be the first spacecraft of its kind to attempt to reach deep space.<\/p>\n<p>The craft&#8217;s 46-foot sails, outfitted with ultra-thin solar cells, will be steered by mission control from the ground, tweaking the angles to ensure enough of the sun&#8217;s rays are hitting the craft to keep it powering on into space.\u00a0 Other solar-sailed crafts have gone into space, but none have made it beyond orbit.\u00a0 One reason could be that it&#8217;s not a cheap mission.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jaxa.jp\/index_e.html\">JAXA space program<\/a> has already spent $16 million on this project.<\/p>\n<p>Ikaros will be launched into space by a rocket along with Japan&#8217;s first Venus-bound satellite before they separate and Ikaros goes fuel-free for the rest of its journey.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/ecogeek.org\/solar-power\/2996-solar-spacecraft-to-launch-in-2010\">Planetary Society<\/a> also has a solar-powered space flight planned for sometime this year.\u00a0 It will interesting to see how the two fair.<\/p>\n<p>via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/article\/2010-04\/japan-launch-solar-sailing-mission-beyond-orbit-first-time\">Popular Science<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/l.yimg.com\/a\/feeds\/us\/grn\/green_ecogeek\/9aheysitvqc\" width=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Japan&#8217;s solar sail-powered &#8220;space yacht&#8221; is all set to launch on May 18.\u00a0 Ikaros (Interplanetary Kite-Craft Accelerated by Radiation of the Sun) will be the first spacecraft of its kind to attempt to reach deep space.
