{"id":546400,"date":"2010-04-28T13:10:29","date_gmt":"2010-04-28T17:10:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opiniojuris.org\/?p=12186"},"modified":"2010-04-28T13:10:29","modified_gmt":"2010-04-28T17:10:29","slug":"the-icc-begins-to-fade-in-importance-in-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/546400","title":{"rendered":"The ICC Begins to Fade in Importance in Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>by Julian Ku <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reaction of key countries to the recent Sudan elections electing Sudan&#8217;s President al-Bashir are in.\u00a0 The bottom line seems to be- the elections were deeply flawed, but not so much so that they should be denounced or set-aside.\u00a0 In the meantime, start planning for the all important referendum on Southern Sudan&#8217;s independence, which will require Bashir&#8217;s cooperation.\u00a0 This appears <a  href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/28\/world\/africa\/28diplo.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss\">to be the view of the U.S. government<\/a>, anyway, and it <a  href=\"http:\/\/www.neurope.eu\/articles\/EU-says-Sudan-election-flawed-but-vital-step-to-peace\/100365.php\">seems largely echoed by the EU<\/a>.\u00a0 Interestingly, neither the E.U. nor the U.S. seems to be emphasizing (or even mentioning) the fact that Sudan is continuing to defy its international obligations to turn over\u00a0individuals demanded by the ICC, including its\u00a0President.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0focus\u00a0remains, as it should be, on preserving the delicate peace process in Sudan.
