{"id":546516,"date":"2010-04-28T15:27:27","date_gmt":"2010-04-28T19:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/permanent-end-labour-party-2010-4"},"modified":"2010-04-28T15:27:27","modified_gmt":"2010-04-28T19:27:27","slug":"why-the-coming-election-could-bring-the-permanent-end-of-the-uk-labour-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/546516","title":{"rendered":"Why The Coming Election Could Bring The PERMANENT End Of The UK Labour Party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"float_right\" src=\"http:\/\/static.businessinsider.com\/image\/4bd889dd7f8b9a2f5dc90300\/gordon-brown-door.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Gordon Brown Door\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gordon Brown&#8217;s gaffe today in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/gordon-brown-calls-woman-bigoted-2010-4\">calling an old woman a bigot<\/a> for her opinions on Eastern Europeans belies bigger problems for a party now faced with becoming obsolete.<\/p>\n<p>The rise of the Liberal Democrats, through leader <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nick-clegg-pound-uk-election-2010-4\">Nick Clegg&#8217;s masterful performances in the country&#8217;s first televised debates<\/a>, is putting pressure on a Labour Party which has been considered the only other since the 1920s.<\/p>\n<p>Then, the Liberal Party <a href=\"http:\/\/news.independentminds.livejournal.com\/6862354.html\">lost its opposition place<\/a> due to a rise in the upstart Labour Party, which better represented the country&#8217;s growing electorate after World War I.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the Liberal Democrats are making moves in the polls, either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politicshome.com\/uk\/the_poll_centre.html\">in the lead or right behind<\/a> the Conservatives. Their supporters are growing, and many are coming from the country&#8217;s middle ground, where Labour has claimed dominance since the rise of Tony Blair in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>In the event of a coalition government, the Liberal Democrats may choose to work with the Conservatives leaving Labour outside government for the first time since 1997.<\/p>\n<p>But the party would also require the Conservatives to change rules on how MPs are voted for, potentially making the system proportionally representative.
