{"id":546532,"date":"2010-04-28T11:56:18","date_gmt":"2010-04-28T15:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oxfam.org.uk\/applications\/blogs\/pressoffice\/?p=12488"},"modified":"2010-04-28T11:56:18","modified_gmt":"2010-04-28T15:56:18","slug":"cheltenham-feels-the-heat-at-the-hustings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/546532","title":{"rendered":"Cheltenham feels the heat at the hustings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"Arial;\"><span style=\"small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfam.org.uk\/generationwhy\/cgi\/process_comp\/photos\/2010\/04\/cheltacq2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12492\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oxfam.org.uk\/generationwhy\/cgi\/process_comp\/photos\/2010\/04\/cheltacq2-180x135.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a>Things were sure hotting up in Cheltenham last night as candidates James Green (Labour), Martin Horwood (Lib Dem), Mark Coote (Tory) and Peter Bowman (UKIP) joined the neon pink table at Cheltenham\u2019s St Andrew\u2019s Church in Montpellier to deliver their ideas on climate change.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"Arial;\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"Arial;\"><span style=\"small;\">With an audience of 70 eager faces suitably refreshed with tea and coffee and the <em>Gloucestershire Echo\u2019s <\/em>photos taken, the panel were ready to begin.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"Arial;\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Arial;\">The Chair, <\/span><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\">Oxfam\u2019s Kathleen Spencer Chapman, introduced \u2018<a title=\"Ask the Climate Question\" href=\"http:\/\/asktheclimatequestion.org.uk\/\" >Ask the Climate Question<\/a>\u2019 a<\/span><span style=\"Arial;\">s the sun went down the church spire, the candidates in turn opened with a short introduction about themselves, their party and their views on climate change. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"Arial;\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Arial;\">Then it was the public\u2019s turn. They probed the panel with questions about <\/span><span style=\"11.0pt;\">reducing carbon emissions, population growth, <a title=\"The Robin Hood Tax\" href=\"http:\/\/robinhoodtax.org.uk\/\" >the Robin Hood Tax<\/a>, monitoring targets, aviation and de-forestation. <\/span><span style=\"Arial;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"Arial;\">Chair Kathleen then invited the audience\u2019s opinion about the Robin Hood Tax. Clearly involved, passionate listeners were quick to stick up their hands, as the majority in the room agreed with the idea.<\/span><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\"> Then they learned from the <\/span><span style=\"bold;\">Tory candidate that he has been heavily lobbied about the tax \u2013 fantastic!<\/span><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"small;\"><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\">Friends of the Earth received recognition for leading the campaign for the Climate Change Act, and the Tory candidate said, \u201cWe want to be the greenest government ever\u201d. Let\u2019s hope that includes the glorious green-<\/span><span style=\"Arial;\">coloured<\/span><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\"> Robin Hood Tax! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"small;\">The Lib Dem candidate mentioned an approach of measuring happiness levels instead of using GDP and GNP, like they do in Bhutan. Perhaps this changed the level of cheer in the room.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"EN-US;\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"small;\">The candidates finished on a high note, very much welcoming the opportunity to examine an issue in depth thanks to a very erudite audience!
