{"id":566331,"date":"2010-05-17T01:32:55","date_gmt":"2010-05-17T05:32:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-05-16-bp-cagey-as-oil-tube-registers-some-success\/"},"modified":"2010-05-17T01:32:55","modified_gmt":"2010-05-17T05:32:55","slug":"bp-cagey-as-oil-tube-registers-%e2%80%98some%e2%80%99-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/566331","title":{"rendered":"BP cagey as oil tube registers \u2018some\u2019 success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tby Agence France-Presse <\/p>\n<p>NEW<br \/>\nORLEANS, La. &#8211; BP succeeded Sunday in capturing &#8220;some&#8221; oil and gas by<br \/>\ninserting a mile-long tube into the main Gulf of Mexico leak, but would not say<br \/>\nif it was a significant percentage of the gusher or just a few drops.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Despite<br \/>\nthe uncertainty, it was still the first tangible sign of success in more than<br \/>\nthree weeks of efforts to prevent at least 210,000 gallons of oil&nbsp; (and <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/Spill-rate-lowballing-reflects-badly-on-government-cleanup-oversight\">maybe<br \/>\nmuch more<\/a>) from spewing unabated into the sea each day and feeding a<br \/>\nmassive slick off the coast of Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>BP<br \/>\nSenior Executive Vice President Kent Wells refused to be specific on quantity,<br \/>\nbut confirmed that after a temporary hitch in which the tube became dislodged<br \/>\novernight, siphoning operations were up and running once again.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We<br \/>\nwill look to &#8230; capture as much of the oil as we can,&#8221; he told reporters<br \/>\nin Houston, Texas. &#8220;At this point, we don&#8217;t know what percentage we will<br \/>\ncapture&#8221; by the process, in which the oil is sucked up as if through a<br \/>\nstraw to a giant ship.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>A<br \/>\nBP statement said simply that the four-inch-diameter tube inserted into the<br \/>\n21-inch leaking pipe using undersea robots had captured &#8220;some amounts of<br \/>\noil and gas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Wells<br \/>\nadded that the BP crews &#8220;don&#8217;t have any idea at this point&#8221; how much<br \/>\ncrude is being collected and would only have a better estimate in coming days.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The<br \/>\noil was stored on board the Discoverer Enterprise drill ship 5,000 feet above<br \/>\non the water&#8217;s surface, and natural gas was burned through a flare system on<br \/>\nboard the ship,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nObama administration seemed unimpressed, however, pointing out that BP&#8217;s latest<br \/>\nefforts, even if they manage to slow the leak, would not permanently stop the<br \/>\nunderwater geyser.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This<br \/>\ntechnique is not a solution to the problem, and it is not yet clear how<br \/>\nsuccessful it may be,&#8221; said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano<br \/>\nand Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a statement. &#8220;We are closely<br \/>\nmonitoring BP&#8217;s test with the hope that it will contain some of the oil, but at<br \/>\nthe same time, federal scientists are continuing to provide oversight and<br \/>\nexpertise to BP as they move forward with other strategies to contain the spill<br \/>\nand stop the flow of oil.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Engineers<br \/>\nare mulling several different options to seal the main leak, which has spewed<br \/>\nout an estimated 5 million gallons so far, according to the most conservative<br \/>\nestimates, and prevent the giant slick from destroying ecologically fragile<br \/>\nwetlands and nature reserves.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>A<br \/>\nrelief well that would divert the flow and allow the well to be permanently<br \/>\nsealed may not be ready until August.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Fresh<br \/>\nanalysis of enormous plumes of oil under the surface suggest the spill may be<br \/>\nfar worse than previously estimated. One was reported to be 10 miles long,<br \/>\nthree miles wide, and 300 feet thick.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Researchers<br \/>\nfrom the National Institute for Undersea Science and Technology said the plumes<br \/>\nwere &#8220;perhaps due to the <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-05-14-u.s.-approves-use-of-subsea-dispersants-to-battle-oil-slick\">deep<br \/>\ninjection of dispersants<\/a> which BP has stated that they are<br \/>\nconducting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Response<br \/>\ncrews have so far used some 560,000 gallons of the <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-05-13-want-to-phase-out-a-hazardous-substance-dump-it-in-the-gulf\">controversial<br \/>\nchemical dispersants<\/a>, spraying them onto surface oil and also directly into<br \/>\nthe leak in a bid to break up the oil.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The<br \/>\noil still exists, it&#8217;s just spread in smaller pieces,&#8221; Aaron Viles,<br \/>\ncampaign director for the Gulf Restoration Network, a coalition of<br \/>\nenvironmental groups, told AFP. &#8220;It could have a significant impact on the<br \/>\nmarine life of the Gulf of Mexico.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>University<br \/>\nof Georgia researcher Samantha Joye, who is on a scientific mission to gather<br \/>\ndetails about the looming environmental disaster, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/16\/us\/16oil.html?hp\">told The New York<br \/>\nTimes<\/a> that oxygen levels have dropped 30 percent near the plumes, in an<br \/>\n&#8220;alarming&#8221; trend that is endangering marine life.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But<br \/>\nAndrew Gowers, head of group media for BP, dismissed reports that<br \/>\n&#8220;speculate&#8221; on the giant plumes.
