{"id":568236,"date":"2010-05-18T08:15:22","date_gmt":"2010-05-18T12:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/?p=8245"},"modified":"2010-05-18T08:15:22","modified_gmt":"2010-05-18T12:15:22","slug":"geothermal-makes-a-comeback-49-mw-hudson-ranch-project-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/568236","title":{"rendered":"Geothermal Makes A Comeback? 49 MW Hudson Ranch Project Begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenenergyreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/v1\/img\/cat\/geothermal.png\" width=\"8\" height=\"8\" alt=\"\" title=\"Geothermal\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8246\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 160px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/653px-Grand_geyser_and_vent_geyser_in_Yellowstone_National_park.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-8246\" title=\"653px-Grand_geyser_and_vent_geyser_in_Yellowstone_National_park\" src=\"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/653px-Grand_geyser_and_vent_geyser_in_Yellowstone_National_park-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geothermal power: ready to take off in the U.S.?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>EnergySource LLC has broken ground on its $399 million, 49.9-megawatt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.streetinsider.com\/Press+Releases\/Energy+Source+Commences+Construction+of+Hudson+Ranch+Power,+a+49+MW+Geothermal+Project+Creating+Over+200+Jobs+in+Imperial+Valley,+CA\/5644654.html\">Hudson Ranch I geothermal project<\/a> in Imperial Valley, Calif., with financing from a banking consortium and GeoGlobal Energy \u2013 a developer backed by New Zealand\u2019s Mighty River Power, Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>The project, which is based on 65 acres of land near the Salton Sea geothermal region, will supply power to the Arizona-based utility Salt River Project for use in the Phoenix area.<span id=\"more-8245\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Energy Source President Dave Watson called the project \u201cone of the best geothermal resources in North America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mighty River Power, a major geothermal operator owned by the government of New Zealand, <a href=\"http:\/\/business.scoop.co.nz\/2010\/05\/18\/mrp-takes-on-us-geothermal-project\/\">will take a $107 million, 20 percent equity stake in the project<\/a> through through the Denver-based GeoGlobal.<\/p>\n<p>Debt financing for the project was raised by ING Capital, Societe Generale, West LB, Union Bank, MetLIfe, CIBC, Siemens Financial and Investec.<\/p>\n<p>The plant will also receive stimulus funds.<\/p>\n<p>The project, which was first explored in 2004, should come online by late 2011 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ivpressonline.com\/articles\/2010\/05\/16\/local_news\/news05.txt\">could be followed by two to four more phases<\/a>, EnergySource Vice President of Development Larry Grogan told the Imperial Valley Press newspaper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/2010\/04\/the-week-in-green-energy-tracking-the-green-dollar\/#more-7667\">Geothermal development has been crawling along<\/a> relative to other renewables, posting a mere 6 percent gain in capacity for 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Geothermal also <a href=\"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/2009\/12\/altarock-energy-shuts-down-california-geothermal-project\/\">faced an image crisis<\/a> in the winter brought on by reports that drilling in Switzerland and near San Francisco heightened earthquake risk.<\/p>\n<p>But Mighty River Power is an expert operator and its doubling down on the technology: the company also announced that it is upping its commitment to the GeoGlobal Energy capital fund to $250 million and will pursue geothermal projects in Chile.<\/p>\n<p>Mighty River Chief Executive Officer Doug Heffernan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601130&amp;sid=arNDM0rSiDXs\">told Bloomberg<\/a> of his company\u2019s relationship with GeoGlobal,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe think there are some other prospects that they may well bring to the table in the U.S. over the next two or three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Image: Courtesy Mila Zinkova\/Wikimedia Commons<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/GreenEnergyReporter\/~4\/MVQwIQGHrfc\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Geothermal power: ready to take off in the U.S.?
