It is highly uncertain how diluted the oil might  get on its voyage to northwestern Cuba and the Florida Keys this week,  but <strong>the possibility for a major ecological disaster in the fragile Keys  ecosystem cannot be ruled out<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For my earlier post, I spoke to toxicologist Carys Mitchelmore, a professor at the University of Maryland\u2019s   Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, an expert on the impact of dispersants and dispersed oil on marine life.<\/p>\n<p>She is particularly concerned about corals because they are   \u201cunder siege from multiple sources, including human sewage, metal   pollution, and of course they are dealing with issues from global   climate change including warming and ocean acidification.\u201d\u00a0 See for  instance, \u201c<a title=\"Permanent Link to Nature Geoscience study:   Oceans  are acidifying 10 times faster today than 55 million years ago  when a  mass extinction of marine species occurred\" rel=\"bookmark\" href=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/2010\/02\/18\/ocean-acidification-study-mass-extinction-of-marine-life-nature-geoscience\/\"><em>Nature  Geoscience<\/em> study:  Oceans are acidifying 10 times faster today  than 55 million  years ago when a mass extinction of marine species  occurred<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe could be getting to the point that puts coral over the  edge,\u201d  in terms of its long-term survival, she warned.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brad Johnson has <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/05\/18\/florida-keys-oil-disaster\/\">more<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Jeff Hoffmeyer, a marine scientist with the  University of Southern Mississippi Center for Fisheries Research and  Development, told the Wonk Room two weeks ago of the <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/05\/04\/oilpocalypse-devastation\/\">frightening  consequences<\/a> of the slick getting caught in the Loop Current:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;If it gets entrained into the Loop [Current], it\u2019s up  into the Atlantic. And who knows where it\u2019s going to go from there. As  it moves around Florida, the next or another critical area would be the  Florida Keys and the coral reefs we have down there. <strong>I don\u2019t  even want to think about that area being covered in oil<\/strong>. Once  it works its way up the East Coast and potentially crossing the  Atlantic, it could be far-reaching.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com\/go\/doc\/2931\/543771\/\">625,000  gallons of toxic dispersants<\/a> have been sprayed on the oil slick,  including 45,000 gallons of dispersants injected directly at the  wellhead \u2014 creating an invisible toxic cloud of unknown size a mile  below the sea surface.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!-- post updates would go here in theory --><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span>Update: <\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/news\/tar-balls-reported-at-key-west-beach-surveys-693727.html\">Tar  balls have washed up<\/a> on Key West beaches.
