{"id":570811,"date":"2010-05-19T17:39:09","date_gmt":"2010-05-19T21:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-05-19-rand-pauls-copenhagen-rant-and-other-election-notes\/"},"modified":"2010-05-19T17:39:09","modified_gmt":"2010-05-19T21:39:09","slug":"rand-paul%e2%80%99s-copenhagen-rant-and-other-election-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/570811","title":{"rendered":"Rand Paul\u2019s Copenhagen rant and other election notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tby Jonathan Hiskes <\/p>\n<p>Climate and energy<br \/>\nissues barely registered in this month&#8217;s primary coverage, but Rand Paul (son of<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/paul1\">Ron<\/a>) saw fit to take on the Copenhagen climate talks after becoming the<br \/>\nRepublican Senate candidate in Kentucky last night.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a president<br \/>\nwho went to Copenhagen and appeared with Robert Mugabe, Hugo Ch&aacute;vez and others&#8212;Evo<br \/>\nMorales&#8212;to apologize for the Industrial Revolution,&#8221; he said. &#8220;These petty<br \/>\ndictators say that to stop climate change it&#8217;s about ending capitalism. The president, by attending Copenhagen, gives credibility and credence to these<br \/>\nfolks, and he should not go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Reality check: Obama supports<br \/>\na market-based (i.e. capitalist) response to climate change&#8212;cap-and-trade. That&#8217;s<br \/>\nthe policy he backed in Copenhagen. He joined more than 100 heads of state<br \/>\nthere and didn&#8217;t show any love to Mugabe, Ch&aacute;vez, or Morales. In fact, when Bolivian<br \/>\npresident Morales boycotted the Copenhagen Accord reached last December, Obama&#8217;s<br \/>\nState Department <a href=\"http:\/\/views.washingtonpost.com\/climate-change\/post-carbon\/2010\/04\/bolivia_ecuador_denied_climate_funds.html\">withdrew<\/a> climate adaptation funding from the country.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Sounds like we can look<br \/>\nforward to more nuanced discussions of who&#8217;s for and against the Industrial<br \/>\nRevolution.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>A few other notes from<br \/>\nlast night&#8217;s election:<\/p>\n<p>Paul&#8217;s victory gives<br \/>\nDemocratic candidate Jack Conway a swinging chance in typically red Kentucky,<br \/>\naccording to <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/44\/2010\/05\/can-rand-paul-defeat-jack-conw.html\">Internet<br \/>\nSpeculation<\/a>. Actually, Salon&#8217;s Alex Pareene <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/politics\/war_room\/2010\/05\/19\/jack_conway_kentucky_senate\">points<br \/>\nout<\/a> that both Conway and his Democratic opponent got more votes in Tuesday&#8217;s primary<br \/>\nthan Paul, which suggests Kentucky isn&#8217;t entirely excited about a Paul-style libertarian<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amconmag.com\/article\/2010\/mar\/01\/00010\/\">rEVOLution<\/a>.<br \/>\nAnd while Conway, who currently serves as Kentucky&#8217;s attorney general, <a href=\"http:\/\/mydd.com\/2010\/4\/22\/an-interview-with-senate-candidate-kentucky-attorney-general-jack-conway\">professes<br \/>\nhis love<\/a> for Kentucky coal, he sounds like he could be a potential &#8220;yes&#8221; vote for a Senate<br \/>\nclean-energy bill.<br \/>\nIn Pennsylvania&#8217;s rather<br \/>\nconservative 12th Congressional District, Democrat Mark Critz decisively beat Republican Tim<br \/>\nBurns in a special election. That&#8217;s good news for Democrats but bad news for<br \/>\ncap-and-trade, Michael Levi <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cfr.org\/levi\/2010\/05\/19\/what-the-pa-12-special-election-says-about-cap-and-trade\/\">notes<\/a>,<br \/>\nas Critz loudly opposed the climate policy and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.critzforcongress.com\/page\/protecting-and-creating-western-pennsylvania-energy-jobs\">professed<br \/>\nhis love<\/a> for Pennsylvania coal.<br \/>\nArkansas Sen. Blanche<br \/>\nLincoln failed to win a majority in the Democratic primary and faces a runoff against challenger Bill<br \/>\nHalter.
