Members of the red shirts, known for supporting <a href=\"http:\/\/jurist.org\/paperchase\/2006\/09\/thai-military-revokes-constitution.php\">ousted<\/a> [JURIST report] prime minister <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/asia-pacific\/1108114.stm\">Thaksin Shinawatra<\/a> [BBC profile; JURIST <a href=\"http:\/\/jurist.org\/jurist_search.php?q=Thaksin\">news archive<\/a>], refused to accept the end of the demonstrations and began <a href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/news\/asia-pacific\/2010\/05\/2010519154720425370.html\">rioting<\/a> [Al Jazeera report] and setting fire to parts of Bangkok. Citizens of the areas affected by the curfew have been ordered to stay inside to ensure their own safety. The Thai military is expected to work through the night to try and reestablish order in the city.    <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/Pages\/WelcomePage.aspx\">UN High Commissioner for Human Rights<\/a> [official website] <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/AboutUs\/Pages\/HighCommissioner.aspx\">Navi Pillay<\/a> [official profile] on Monday urged both the Thai government and anti-government protesters to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/Media.aspx?IsMediaPage=true\">seek a peaceful resolution<\/a> [press release; JURIST <a href=\"http:\/\/jurist.org\/paperchase\/2010\/05\/un-rights-chief-urges-peaceful-resolution-to-thailand-conflict.php\">report<\/a>] to the current conflict. Last week, a Thai court <a href=\"http:\/\/jurist.org\/paperchase\/2010\/05\/thailand-court-sentences-protesters-to-six-months-in-prison.php\">sentenced 27 red shirt protesters<\/a> [JURIST report] to six months in prison. Last month, Thailand&#8217;s pro-government <a href=\"http:\/\/www.padnet.net\/\">People&#8217;s Alliance for Democracy Network<\/a> [party website, in Thai; BBC <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/asia-pacific\/8004306.stm\">backgrounder<\/a>], known as yellow shirts, <a href=\"http:\/\/jurist.org\/paperchase\/2010\/04\/thailand-pro-government-yellow-shirts.php\">called for a declaration of martial law<\/a> [JURIST report] to quell the anti-government movement spearheaded by the red shirts. Earlier in April, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva announced that he was <a href=\"http:\/\/jurist.org\/paperchase\/2010\/04\/thailand-pm-demands-protesters-abide-by.php\">prepared to negotiate<\/a> [JURIST report] with red shirt protesters once they cease their illegal conduct.
