{"id":571773,"date":"2010-05-20T11:52:26","date_gmt":"2010-05-20T15:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sevensidedcube.net\/?p=11617"},"modified":"2010-05-20T11:52:26","modified_gmt":"2010-05-20T15:52:26","slug":"pakistan-blocks-youtube-and-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/571773","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan Blocks YouTube and Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevensidedcube.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/youtube-blocked-pta1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11620\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sevensidedcube.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/youtube-blocked-pta1-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Officials of <strong>Pakistan Telecommunications Authority <\/strong>stated thay they<strong> <\/strong>have ordered operators to block <strong>YouTube <\/strong>due to \u201cgrowing sacrilegious content\u201d.\u00a0 They stated that they reached the decision this Thursday after all \u201cpossible avenues were used within its jurisdiction, including using regular channels available on the <em>Facebook and YouTube<\/em> to launch protest, to avoid appearances of derogatory <em>material <\/em>available on their <em>web sites<\/em>.\u201d Access to <strong>Wikipedia<\/strong>, an <em>online encyclopedia<\/em>, and <strong>Flickr<\/strong>, a <em>photosharing site<\/em>, were restricted starting Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevensidedcube.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple-bans-facebook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11629\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sevensidedcube.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/apple-bans-facebook-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a>Facebook <\/strong>was blocked temporarily in a row over a competition which involved caricatures of the prophet <strong>Muhammad<\/strong>. It was blocked a day before the \u201c<em>Everybody Draw Mohammed Day<\/em>\u201d which was scheduled by a <em>Facebook<\/em> group bearing the same name. \u00a0According to Islam, these are <em>blasphemous<\/em> acts. There had been protests in several Pakistani cities caused by the Facebook competition.<strong> Khoram Ali Mehran<\/strong> of the telecommunication authority said, \u201cObviously (the blocking of Facebook ) is related to the objectionable material that was placed on Facebook. That is why it is blocked. We have blocked it for an indefinite time. We are just following the government&#8217;s instructions and the ruling of the Lahore High Court. If the government decides to unblock it, then that&#8217;s what we will do.\u201d \u00a0<strong>Ibrahim Hooper<\/strong>, spokesman for the <strong>Council on American-Islamic Relations<\/strong>, said \u201cIslam discourages any visual representations of the <strong>prophets<\/strong> of <strong>God<\/strong> &#8212; <strong>Jesus<\/strong>, <strong>Moses<\/strong>, <strong>Mohammed<\/strong>, anybody &#8212; because we believe it can lead to a form of <em>idol worship<\/em>. The majority of <strong>Muslims<\/strong> worldwide object to <em>any<\/em> <em>representation<\/em> of a prophet of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A series of cartoons of <strong>Mohammed<\/strong> in a <em>Danish Newspaper<\/em> published in 2005 caused many riots around the world and now there are at least two <em>European cartoonists<\/em> who live under police protection after the publication of their drawings of the Muslim prophet. <strong>Mimi Sulpovar<\/strong>, the one who started the Facebook group,(claimed to have gained the idea form a bleeped out episode of \u201c<strong>South Park<\/strong>\u201d)said \u201cThis extends beyond being able to draw. If it&#8217;s offensive to you, that&#8217;s fine, but I don&#8217;t feel it&#8217;s right to impose your belief on others through intimidation.
