The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.nsw.gov.au\/prod\/parlment\/nswbills.nsf\/1d436d3c74a9e047ca256e690001d75b\/1b106ecb7420c2a8ca2576d50003dfa6?OpenDocument\">bill<\/a> [materials], proposed by Christian Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdp.org.au\/fred-nile-his-autobiography.html\">Fred Nile<\/a> [official profile], would have banned the wearing of the burqa in Australia&#8217;s most populous state. Nile insisted the bill was <a href=\"http:\/\/news.smh.com.au\/breaking-news-national\/burqa-debate-stopped-in-nsw-upper-house-20100520-vjt7.html\">aimed at protecting<\/a> [AAP report] women&#8217;s rights and improving security. Opponents, however, contended the bill would stigmatize Muslims and argued that the issue is not one of great importance. The bill&#8217;s introduction came after a national debate on the issue <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5jEGNC9GxkTdbmZCuaw62lN4AfRzw\">following comments made by a conservative national senator<\/a> [AFP report] calling for a national ban on the burqa.  <\/p>\n<p>Many jurisdictions are currently considering legislation that would ban the burqa. On Wednesday, the French Cabinet <a href=\"http:\/\/jurist.org\/paperchase\/2010\/05\/france-cabinent-approves-legislation-to-ban-burqa.php\">approved legislation<\/a> [JURIST report] that would ban the wearing of the burqa or other face veils in public. On Tuesday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/canada\/montreal\/story\/2010\/05\/18\/niqab-hearings-quebec.html\">hearings began<\/a> [CBC report] in Quebec&#8217;s legislature on a bill introduced in March that would ban women from wearing full face veils from public services. Earlier this month, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/public\/default_en.htm\">European Parliament<\/a> [official website] <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koch-mehrin.de\/\">Vice President Silvana Koch-Mehrin<\/a> [official website, in German] expressed her support for a <a href=\"http:\/\/jurist.org\/paperchase\/2010\/05\/europe-parliament-vp-calls-for-continent-wide-burqa-ban.php\">continent-wide burqa ban<\/a> [JURIST report].
