The International Day for Biological Diversity highlights the need to manage ecosystems to fight poverty.<\/strong><\/p>\n

May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity<\/a>, part of an entire year<\/a> of celebration. This year\u2019s theme, \u201cBiodiversity, Development, and Poverty Alleviation,\u201d<\/a> highlights the critical roles that biodiversity and ecosystems play in human livelihoods around the world. With new species<\/a> (and new threats<\/a>) discovered every day, now is a critical time to protect the vast array of life on Earth for nature\u2019s, and for people\u2019s sake.<\/p>\n

Through our work, WRI aims to reduce poverty and encourage effective ecosystem stewardship. In our Ecosystem Services for Development project, we help developing countries<\/a> and multilateral development banks<\/a> (MDBs) understand the interactions between ecosystem services, people, and poverty.<\/p>\n
