{"id":575949,"date":"2010-05-23T09:01:35","date_gmt":"2010-05-23T13:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.jwatch.org\/hiv-id-observations\/?p=946"},"modified":"2010-05-23T09:01:35","modified_gmt":"2010-05-23T13:01:35","slug":"dengue-in-the-news-%e2%80%a6%c2%a0again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/575949","title":{"rendered":"Dengue in the News \u2026\u00a0Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/mm5919a1.htm\" >dengue cases<\/a> acquired in Florida prompted me to think of two things.<\/p>\n<p>First, is this really a surprise? \u00a0Dengue has become increasingly common in the\u00a0Caribbean, the mosquitoes that transmit the virus are widespread in the United States, and it&#8217;s not as if there&#8217;s some sort of microbiologically (if that&#8217;s a word) impermeable barrier between the islands in the Caribbean and our southernmost states:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px initial initial;\" title=\"caribbean map\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.jwatch.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/caribbean-map1.png\" alt=\"caribbean map\" width=\"540\" height=\"324\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Add a dose of climate change (not mentioned in the\u00a0<em>MMWR <\/em>editorial &#8212; just a hunch), and bingo, the perfect recipe for tropical diseases in the Continental 48.<\/p>\n<p>Still, many kudos to the astute ID doctor in Rochester NY who made the diagnosis:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>During this third visit [to her primary care doctor], a consulting infectious-disease specialist raised the possibility of dengue infection, despite no recent travel by the patient to a known dengue-endemic area.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hey, this is why they pay us the big bucks!<\/p>\n<p>The second thing I thought about was another time dengue was the headline in\u00a0<em>MMWR. \u00a0<span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Anyone remember the\u00a0<em>really big news <\/em>in MMWR when the lead was &#8220;Dengue type 4 infections in U.S. travelers to the Caribbean&#8221;?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/HivAndIdObservations\/~4\/8NXgsatj-mA\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The recent\u00a0dengue cases acquired in Florida prompted me to think of two things.
