An interesting soundbite from Venter&#8217;s presentation is<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8216;<strong>This is the first self-replicating species that we&#8217;ve had on the planet whose parent is a computer<\/strong>&#8216;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One research group has identified a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/05\/100520093030.htm\" >novel pathway<\/a> involving amyloid plaque mediated excitotoxic cell death in a model of Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease which may lead to new therapeutic approaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>There is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/05\/100520212611.htm\" >evidence<\/a> that build up of Amyloid Beta leads to cataracts in people with Down Syndrome as well as being associated with early onset of Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/05\/100521191440.htm\" >One group<\/a> has identified details of Lithium mediated anti-inflammatory pathways which may contribute to an understanding of Lithium&#8217;s mechanism(s) of action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Further research shows an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/05\/100520092940.htm\" >association between adult central adiposity<\/a> and later life dementia in this study of community residents (n=700).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The authors of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/05\/100519092708.htm\" >this study<\/a> have called for psychiatrists to be included in &#8216;disaster first-response&#8217; teams on the basis of their findings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/05\/100518170032.htm\" >JAMA paper<\/a> outlines details of a successful suicide reduction program in people with depression. In this population, the suicide rate was reduced by 75% and over a 2.5 year period was 0.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A group of physicists have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/05\/100518093822.htm\" >predicted<\/a> that the magnetic fields associated with ball lightning would be sufficient to stimulate phosphenes, visual experiences secondary to cortical activation which would likely influence the perception of lightning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">Psychiatry 2.0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There&#8217;s an interesting piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/abctherapeutics.blogspot.com\/2010\/05\/left-and-right.html\" >falling<\/a> at ABC Therapeutics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajnrblog.org\/2010\/05\/19\/annotated-bibliography-7\/\" >AJNR post<\/a> there are useful links to articles on neuroimaging in autism, the development of the cerebral sulci and gyri as well as the neurosurgical uses of Diffuse Tensor Imaging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>At the Brain Disease blog there is a short piece on the <a href=\"http:\/\/braindiseases.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/10\/when-hospitals-fail\/\" >closure of a hospital<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Stephanie Allen links to online neuroscience videos in <a href=\"http:\/\/westallen.typepad.com\/brains_on_purpose\/2010\/05\/resource-for-those-interested-in-.html\" >this post<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Dr Shock links to a video of Richard Dawkins speaking on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockmd.com\/2010\/05\/22\/has-technology-hindered-evolution\/\" >ageing genes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>At the <a href=\"http:\/\/neuropathologyblog.blogspot.com\/2010\/05\/alzheimer-patients-to-get-nerve-growth.html\" >Neuropathology blog<\/a> there is a look at a phase II study in which Nerve Growth Factor is being injected into the Basal Nucleus of Meynert in subjects with Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a very interesting article on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myexperiment.org\/\" >social media tool<\/a> for sharing scientific research data &#8211; My Experiment &#8211; discussed at &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/duncan.hull.name\/2010\/05\/21\/myvideo\/\" >O&#8217;Really<\/a>&#8216; and the blogger has been involved in the production of the videos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2010\/05\/20\/telehealth-is-here-and-its-growing\/\" >Telehealth<\/a> at the Singularity Hub.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>There author gives a top 11 reading list at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluetoblue.org\/2010\/05\/recommended-reading.html\" >Blue to Blue<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A study finding Thalamic D2 receptor density associations with creativity is covered at <a href=\"http:\/\/noustuff.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/19\/dopamine-mental-illness-and-creativity\/\" >Nou Stuff<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>At <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/corpuscallosum\/2010\/05\/i_just_noticed.php\" >Corpus Callosum<\/a> there is a brief piece on how average hours of TV watching exceeds average hours of working per week in US research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The American Society of Human Genetics has produced an important position paper on genetic ancestry and this is discussed at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegeneticgenealogist.com\/2010\/05\/14\/american-society-of-human-genetics-publishes-updated-genetic-ancestry-testing-statement\/\" >Genetic Genealogist blog<\/a>.
