LONDON\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The first commercial promoting abortion services is airing on a British TV network.<\/p>\n
The outfit behind it, Marie Stopes International, is one of the biggest abortion providers in the UK. It say the ad is \u201cclear and non-judgemental\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ad is not about abortion,\u201d Julie Douglas, marketing manager of Marie Stopes told Fox News, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t mention abortion.\u00a0 It\u2019s about unplanned pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n
But\u00a0 pro-life advocates in the UK say the commercial is ALL about abortion and it\u2019s going mass-market.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis advertisement will go in between advertisements for car insurance and cornflakes,\u201d Anthony Ozimic of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children asserted to Fox, \u201cMany people have objected to it on that basis.\u201d<\/p>\n
As in the States, abortion is a controversial subject here.\u00a0 It is legal in Great Britain. where abortion rates are some of the highest in Europe. \u00a0And with the National Health Service, the government here picks up the tab. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
For its part, Channel 4, the TV network airing the commercial, says it\u2019s running it at an \u201cappropriate time,\u201d after 10:00 in the evening.<\/p>\n
It says it\u2019s been approved for broadcast by government authorities.<\/p>\n
And that it\u2019s up to the viewers to make their own judgement about its content.<\/p>\n
That UK government approval is actually based on Stopes\u2019 non-profit, charity status. \u00a0If it was a profit-making firm, the spots wouldn\u2019t be allowed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As for the public, three quarters of those questioned in one survey said they had no problem with the ads airing.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf people want to go for that,\u201d one Londoner told us, \u201cthey should go for that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another remarked, \u201cI don\u2019t think most people will object.\u201d<\/p>\n
But others are angry and want to push the Culture Minister of a new Conservative-led government to act against the commercial.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Minister should call on them to reverse the decision,\u201d advocate Ozimic told us, \u201cor overrule them if he has the power to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n
