{"id":577519,"date":"2010-05-24T23:01:18","date_gmt":"2010-05-25T03:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.personalliberty.com\/liberty\/in-a-letter-to-pentagon-civil-rights-groups-defend-press-freedom\/"},"modified":"2010-05-24T23:01:18","modified_gmt":"2010-05-25T03:01:18","slug":"in-a-letter-to-pentagon-civil-rights-groups-defend-press%c2%a0freedom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/577519","title":{"rendered":"In A Letter To Pentagon, Civil Rights Groups Defend Press\u00a0Freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pictures.directnews.co.uk\/liveimages\/The+Pentagon_1961_19793301_0_0_7054843_300.jpg\" alt=\"In a letter to Pentagon, civil rights groups defend press freedom \" align=\"right\" class=\"post_image\">Several human and civil rights organizations sent a letter to top officials at the Pentagon demanding the reversal of the ban on several reporters covering military commission hearings of foreign terrorist suspects in Guantanamo Bay. <\/p>\n<p>The letter was prompted by the ban imposed on four journalists from the United States and Canada for publishing the name of an interrogator in one of the cases. <\/p>\n<p>The four, who include reporters from <i>The Miami Herald<\/i>, <i>The Toronto Star<\/i>, <i>The Globe and Mail<\/i> and <i>Canwest News Service<\/i>, allege the ban is &quot;illegal and unconstitutional,&quot; because the name of the interrogator was already in the public domain, and publishing it did not constitute a violation of the Pentagon&#8217;s rules, according to media reports. <\/p>\n<p>In their intervention, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Human Rights First, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the National Institute of Military Justice said that &quot;this [decision] not only runs counter to the U.S. administration&#8217;s stated commitment to transparency in government, but will also bring the military commissions into further disrepute, internationally and within the U.S.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon has said the newspapers in question can continue to cover the story, which involves detainee Omar Khadr, but they must send other journalist to do so.  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ADNFCR-1961-ID-19793301-ADNFCR\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.directnews.co.uk\/feedtrack\/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1961&amp;itemid=19793301\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several human and civil rights organizations sent a letter to top officials at the Pentagon demanding the reversal of the ban on several reporters covering military commission hearings of foreign terrorist suspects in Guantanamo Bay.
