\nmassive economic changes like company fines to help save species and protect
\nthe natural world, the Guardian<\/em> reports<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n
The study, which
\nis due for publication in the summer, will argue that the economic case for
\nglobal action to protect biodiversity is even more powerful than the argument
\nfor tackling climate change, according to the newspaper.\n<\/p>\n
The report,
\nentitled “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” (TEEB), was
\nlaunched by Brussels in 2007 with the support of the U.N. Environment Program,
\nafter G8 and major emerging economies called for a global study.\n<\/p>\n
If nature is not
\nfactored into the global economic system, then the environment will become more
\nfragile and exposed to external shocks, placing human lives and the world
\neconomy in jeopardy, it will argue.\n<\/p>\n
The TEEB report
\nwill also recommend that companies are fined and taxed for over-exploitation of
\nthe natural world, with strict limits imposed on what they can take from the
\nenvironment, according to the paper.\n<\/p>\n
Alongside
\nfinancial results, businesses and governments should also be asked to provide
\naccounts for their use of natural and human resources.\n<\/p>\n
And communities
\nshould be paid to preserve natural environments rather than deplete them.\n<\/p>\n

\nreport, published on the U.N.‘s International Day for Biological Diversity,
\nadded that the U.N. will also recommend reforming state subsidies for certain
\nindustries, like energy, farming, fishing, and transport.\n<\/p>\n
\nwill also warn that one-third of the world’s natural habitats have been damaged
\nby humans.\n<\/p>\n
\nof “natural goods and services” like pollination, medicines, fertile
\nsoil, clean air, and water will be around 10 and 100 times the cost of saving
\nthe species and natural habitats which provide them.\n<\/p>\n
\nsea change in human thinking and attitudes towards nature,” said Indian
\neconomist and report author Pavan Sukhdev, cited by the Guardian<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n
\ninitiative, also appealed for nature to be regarded “not as something to
\nbe vanquished, conquered, but rather something to be cherished and lived
\nwithin.”\n<\/p>\n
