It is occasionally tedious to read about<br \/>\nso many people beating themselves up over the teeniest of eco-conundrums&mdash;or<br \/>\nbeating me up for actually bothering to answer them. But yours is to wonder why,<br \/>\nmine is to answer. Or try, as I always say.\n<\/p>\n<p>Thusly,<br \/>\nyour question is a bit of fresh air&mdash;a nice momentary breather from heavy,<br \/>\nalbeit very important, environmental issues such as the massive Gulf oil spill<br \/>\n(see the last question in this week&#8217;s column). I did a little searching through<br \/>\nthe <em>Grist<\/em> archives as well and came<br \/>\nup with <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-02-26-could-novels-about-climate-change-shake-us-to-our-senses\">this piece from<br \/>\nFebruary<\/a>,<br \/>\nwhich reviews the novels <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/9780374153533?&amp;PID=25450\"><em>Far North<\/em><\/a> by Marcel Theroux and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/9780982175644?&amp;PID=25450\"><em>Primitive<\/em><\/a> by Mark Nykanen&mdash;both are worth a look, for<br \/>\nsure.\n<\/p>\n<p>Additionally,<br \/>\nwith a little help from my fellow Gristians, I&#8217;ve compiled a list&mdash;by no means<br \/>\ncomprehensive&mdash;of some environmentally tinged fiction by both female and male<br \/>\nauthors to whet your eco-literary appetite.\n<\/p>\n<p> Margaret<br \/>\nAtwood&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/17-9780385503853-10\"><em>Oryx and Crake<\/em><\/a> and its companion novel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/7-9780385528771-4\"><em>The<br \/>\nYear of the Flood<\/em><\/a>,<br \/>\nboth dystopian-future tales with genetic and biotech experiments gone awry and<br \/>\na massive eco and health catastrophe threatening humankind<\/p>\n<p> Jane Smiley&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/2-9781400033836-2\"><em>A Thousand Acres<\/em><\/a>, a modern<br \/>\nretelling of <em>King Lear<\/em> and a devastating<br \/>\nbut beautifully written account of industrial farming<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p> Ian<br \/>\nMcEwan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/17-9780385533416-0\"><em>Solar<\/em><\/a>, in which a Nobel prize-winning physicist<br \/>\nstruggles with his fifth failing marriage and attempts to save the planet from<br \/>\nenvironmental disaster<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Vapor-Trails-1-R-Siegel\/dp\/0615297471\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1274392675&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>Vapor Trails<\/em><\/a> by R.P. Siegel and Roger Saillant, about<br \/>\nan oil exec who is unable to reconcile his financial success with the<br \/>\ndestruction he&#8217;s caused (hmm&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p> Edward<br \/>\nAbbey&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/17-9780061129766-3\"><em>The Monkey Wrench Gang<\/em><\/a>, about a former<br \/>\nGreen Beret who returns from war to find his much-loved desert threatened by<br \/>\nindustrial development<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/17-9780553375404-27\"><em>Ishmael<\/em><\/a> by Daniel Quinn,<br \/>\nwhich is about an extraordinary teacher&mdash;a gorilla&mdash;with a story to tell about<br \/>\nhow humans came to treat the earth the way they do and the possibility of a<br \/>\nstill-salvageable future<\/p>\n<p>If<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re looking to simply wade rather than dive into the world of environmental<br \/>\nfiction, I&#8217;d recommend a short story. A few that are worth a gander: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/62-9780789156327-0\"><em>A<br \/>\nSound of Thunder<\/em><\/a> by Ray Bradbury, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/61-9781409943655-0\"><em>A<br \/>\nWhite Heron<\/em><\/a> by Sarah Orne Jewett, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/2-9780449236727-1\"><em>It&#8217;s<br \/>\nSuch a Beautiful Day<\/em><\/a> by Isaac Asimov.\n<\/p>\n<p>And<br \/>\nthen there are always the much-loved classics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/7-9780156012195-10\"><em>The<br \/>\nLittle Prince<\/em><\/a> by Antoine de de Saint-Exup&eacute;ry<em> <\/em>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/1-9780394823379-16\"><em>The<br \/>\nLorax<\/em><\/a> by Dr. Seuss. Never underestimate the power of a quality children&#8217;s book:<br \/>\n&#8220;Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get<br \/>\nbetter. Rybarcyzk  informed us that they have a plentiful supply of<br \/>\nideal boom for their needs and will not be in want of donated boom or<br \/>\nrenewable fiber.&#8221; Alas, the search for a solution continues. <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>Props to<br \/>\nyou for your willingness to donate your locks for this hairy situation.
