{"id":578199,"date":"2010-05-25T18:10:39","date_gmt":"2010-05-25T22:10:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/?p=85700"},"modified":"2010-05-25T18:10:39","modified_gmt":"2010-05-25T22:10:39","slug":"obama%e2%80%99s-troop-deployment-to-border-draws-rebuke-from-both-sides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/578199","title":{"rendered":"Obama\u2019s Troop Deployment to Border Draws Rebuke From Both Sides"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Obama&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/05\/25\/AR2010052503227.html?hpid=topnews\" >decision  today to deploy 1,200 National Guard troops<\/a> to beef up security on the U.S.-Mexico  border, at a cost of $500 million, has fallen short of a GOP embrace  and at the same time alienated some of his progressive allies.<\/p>\n<p>Obama\u2019s move &#8212; seemingly an overture  to win Republican support for immigration reform after <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/99767-obama-senate-gop-clash-at-meeting\" >meeting  with GOP senators earlier today<\/a> &#8212;  earned a backhanded response from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and was  likewise chided by the leading pro-immigration reform group America\u2019s Voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmericans are hungry for real  leadership on immigration, but this move by the President serves only to  reward those who are standing in the way of real reform,\u201d Frank Sharry,  executive director of America\u2019s Voice, told me in an e-mail, alleging  Obama has taken \u201cone step forward and two steps back.\u201d<span id=\"more-85700\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>McCain, who reportedly requested a deployment during the meeting, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/us_national_guard_border;_ylt=AqfgAAueNS813gKcyMjjXSCs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTNvOWFuMW1xBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAwNTI1L3VzX25hdGlvbmFsX2d1YXJkX2JvcmRlcgRjY29kZQNtb3N0cG9wdWxhcgRjcG9zAzEEcG9zAzIEcHQDaG9tZV9jb2tlBHNlYwN5bl90b3Bfc3RvcnkEc2xrA29iY\">said<\/a> he \u201cappreciate[s]\u201d the president\u2019s intention but thinks the move is \u201csimply not enough\u201d to tackle Arizona\u2019s  border woes.
