I&#8217;ve never been there before, and I am psyched. Rumor is I&#8217;ll be <a title=\"amongst Presidential company\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagobreakingnews.com\/2010\/05\/obama-and-family-will-spend-memorial-day-in-chicago.html\">amongst <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"163\" alt=\"plane_5_26_10\" hspace=\"10\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.usa.gov\/roller\/govgab\/resource\/images\/plane_5_26_10.jpg\" width=\"284\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"10\" border=\"0\" \/>Presidential company<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p>When planning this getaway, three of my friends decided they wanted to make it a <a title=\"road trip\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usa.gov\/Citizen\/Topics\/Travel\/Road.shtml\">road trip<\/a> and spend the day driving from <a title=\"DC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pueblo.gsa.gov\/cic_text\/travel\/wash-dc\/dc-intro.htm\">DC<\/a> to Illinois. Being much smarter than them (and by that I mean spring break &#8217;07, driving from Pittsburgh to Panama City Beach &#8211; lesson learned), I booked my <a title=\"flight\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usa.gov\/Citizen\/Topics\/Travel\/Air.shtml\">flight<\/a> and told them I&#8217;d meet them there.<\/p>\n<p>I bought my ticket a few weeks ago, and it was pretty reasonable. I&#8217;m glad I did it then, because five of the major U.S. airlines just announced <a title=\"additional fees\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/TRAVEL\/05\/25\/airfare.surcharges\/index.html?hpt=T3\">additional fees<\/a> for peak summer days. In this case, &quot;peak&quot; seems to be any day from June 10 &#8211; August 22, excluding <a title=\"July 4th\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usa.gov\/Topics\/Independence_Day.shtml\">July 4th<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d yet to stop complaining about additional charges to check my suitcase &#8211; then this.<\/p>\n<p>To help keep costs down this summer use the following tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Book early to get the best rates. <\/li>\n<li>Try to travel on &quot;off&quot; days. Friday and Saturday flights tend to be more expensive, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays being the cheapest. <\/li>\n<li>Booking airfare and hotel stays as a &quot;package&quot; will often save you money, rather than booking separately. <\/li>\n<li>Carry on your luggage if possible to avoid baggage fees. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Memorial Day weekend I am going to Chicago.
