{"id":579743,"date":"2010-05-26T13:24:53","date_gmt":"2010-05-26T17:24:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-05-26-oil-rig-workers-missed-very-large-abnormality-before-explosion\/"},"modified":"2010-05-26T13:24:53","modified_gmt":"2010-05-26T17:24:53","slug":"oil-rig-workers-missed-%e2%80%98very-large-abnormality%e2%80%99-before-explosion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/579743","title":{"rendered":"Oil rig workers missed \u2018very large abnormality\u2019 before explosion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Randy Rieland.<\/p>\n<p>  Here&#8217;s<br \/>\nsomething to fill you with confidence on the eve of BP&#8217;s risky &#8220;Top Kill&#8221;<br \/>\ngambit: Workers on the Deepwater Horizon<br \/>\nrig missed warnings that something was seriously wrong before the rig exploded.<br \/>\nBP itself, in a memo to a House committee, reveals that crewmen failed to heed <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704026204575265701607603066.html\">signs<br \/>\nof a &#8220;very large abnormality&#8221;<\/a><strong> <\/strong>underwater. In fact, they apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/e2-wire\/677-e2-wire\/99903-house-panel-details-warning-signs-in-hours-before-offshore-rig-blast\">missed one warning<br \/>\nsign after another<\/a> that day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third time&#8217;s the charm?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Or will it be three strikes you&#8217;re out? Later today, BP will try, try, try<br \/>\nagain to&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-05-25-is-the-gulf-oil-spill-spinning-out-of-control\/\">as the president put it<\/a>&#8212;&#8220;plug the damn hole.&#8221; This latest attempt is the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/science\/la-sci-topkill-20100523,0,2997347.story\">top kill<\/a>,&#8221; in which a mix of<br \/>\nheavy mud and cement is shot into the well to counteract the upward pressure of leaking oil and gas. If the top kill fails,<br \/>\nBP will move on to the &#8220;junk shot,&#8221; in which a gumbo of rope, tires, and golf balls<br \/>\ngets pumped into the leak. If the junk shot doesn&#8217;t work, it&#8217;s &#8220;top hat&#8221; time&#8212;the<br \/>\nsmaller of the two containment domes will be lowered over the well to hopefully<br \/>\ncapture leaking oil and pump it to the surface.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And if <em>that<\/em> doesn&#8217;t work, well, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-05-25-what-if-the-oil-spill-just-cant-be-fixed\/\">we&#8217;re pretty much screwed<\/a>.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-05-25-what-if-the-oil-spill-just-cant-be-fixed\/\"><br \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now that the oil giant relented to pressure from<br \/>\nthe feds, we can watch it all go down on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bp.com\/liveassets\/bp_internet\/globalbp\/globalbp_uk_english\/homepage\/STAGING\/local_assets\/bp_homepage\/html\/rov_stream.html\">BP webcam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That&#8217;ll<br \/>\nshow &lsquo;em <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A criminal investigation of BP is gaining<br \/>\ntraction. The Justice Department now says<br \/>\nit will give &#8220;due consideration&#8221; to <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/e2-wire\/677-e2-wire\/99819-justice-department-dems-push-for-bp-criminal-probe-gets-due-consideration\">charges by a group of Senate Democrats<\/a> that<br \/>\nBP misled the feds about its ability to respond to oil spills in the Gulf of<br \/>\nMexico.<\/p>\n<p>And in a ratcheted-up<br \/>\ncampaign to show he&#8217;s pissed, President Obama will announce tomorrow that federal regulators<br \/>\nwill <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704026204575266714089093670.html\">stop being soft touches<\/a> when they inspect offshore oil rigs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fox, henhouse &#8230; henhouse, fox<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All of which raises more<br \/>\nstink about a system in which regulators don&#8217;t regulate. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/26\/opinion\/26dowd.html\">Maureen Dowd, writing in <em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>, draws parallels with the<br \/>\nrecent banking fiasco:<\/p>\n<p>As when derivatives<br \/>\nexperts had to help unravel the derivatives debacle, now the White House is<br \/>\ndependent on BP to find a solution to the horror it created. The financial<br \/>\ncrisis and the oil spill are both man-made disasters brought on by hubris and<br \/>\navarice.<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/26\/opinion\/26dowd.html\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/05\/25\/AR2010052505154.html\"><em>The Washington Post&#8217;s <\/em>Steve Pearlstein says<\/a>, &#8220;It&#8217;s time for the business community to give up its jihad against regulation.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>It<br \/>\nhardly captures the breadth and depth of these regulatory failures to say that<br \/>\nduring the Bush administration the pendulum swung a bit too far in the<br \/>\ndirection of deregulation and lax enforcement.
