The oil giant&#8217;s report<br \/>\nto Congress suggested crews working for Transocean missed <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/e2-wire\/677-e2-wire\/99903-house-panel-details-warning-signs-in-hours-before-offshore-rig-blast\">&#8220;warning signs&#8221; of<br \/>\nserious problems under the rig before it exploded<\/a>, and raised questions about Halliburton&#8217;s cement<br \/>\nwork. But what goes around comes around. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ian Urbina, writing in the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/27\/us\/27rig.html\">New York Times<\/a>, <\/em>reports that just days before the explosion, BP<br \/>\nchose to use a cheaper, but riskier casing for the well. And more details have begun spilling out<br \/>\nabout a heated explosion-day argument on the rig. Transocean reps wanted no part of a plan to<br \/>\nreplace heavy drilling fluid in the pipe with lighter sea water. <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704717004575268302434395796.html\">A BP &#8220;company man&#8221; overruled them.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\n<em>New Orleans Times Picayune<\/em> is<br \/>\nstarting to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/news\/gulf-oil-spill\/index.ssf\/2010\/05\/gulf_of_mexico_rig_explosion_i.html\">lay some wood on BP too<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s<br \/>\nunclear whether the disaster would have been prevented had the drilling mud not<br \/>\nbeen pumped out prematurely, but the blowout would definitely have been less<br \/>\nlikely. Removing the fluid was BP&#8217;s call, and the firm needs to own up to its<br \/>\nmistakes.<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace<br \/>\nis soliciting <a href=\"http:\/\/motherjones.com\/blue-marble\/2010\/05\/BP-logo-oil-spill-greenpeace?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+motherjones%2FTheBlueMarble+%28Mother+Jones+%7c+The+Blue+Marble%29\">redesigns of<br \/>\nBP&#8217;s sunny green logo<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>ODrama&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The next two days will go a long way<br \/>\nin determining whether the president gets stuck in BP&#8217;s muck. Extending the drilling freeze today and<br \/>\nflying to the Gulf tomorrow may rehabilitate his feskless image. And if<br \/>\nthe &#8220;Top Kill&#8221; works, he can go all presidential and take control of the cleanup. But<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s still on the high wire.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are two takes on his dicey<br \/>\ndilemma from a <a href=\"http:\/\/roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/26\/is-it-obamas-oil-spill-now\/\"><em>New York Times <\/em><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/26\/is-it-obamas-oil-spill-now\/\">online<br \/>\ndebate<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Glenn Greenwald, Salon.com<br \/>\ncolumnist:<\/p>\n<p>Far more<br \/>\nsignificant will be the perception that he (Obama) failed to &#8220;protect&#8221; us from<br \/>\nthis threat, a potentially devastating belief in a society where &#8220;protecting us<br \/>\nfrom harm&#8221; has come to be seen as the president&#8217;s overarching responsibility<br \/>\n(far higher than what the Constitution actually describes as the prime<br \/>\npresidential duty: &#8220;to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution&#8221;).<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Samuel Thernstrom,<br \/>\nresident fellow, American Enterprise Institute:<\/p>\n<p>The president<br \/>\nmust juggle competing concerns: He can correctly point to mounting evidence<br \/>\nthat both BP and Transocean cut crucial corners in their haste to finish this<br \/>\nwell, but he cannot succumb to the natural temptation to demonize drilling if<br \/>\nhe wants to preserve the opportunity for bipartisan climate and energy<br \/>\nlegislation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cry them a<br \/>\nriver<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, Christine Dell&#8217;Amore,&nbsp; writing for <em>National Geographic <\/em>notes a little discussed, self-destructive fallout from the<br \/>\nspreading spill: it could <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2010\/05\/100525-gulf-oil-spill-pipelines-science-environment\/\">end up doing serious damage to the oil<br \/>\nindustry&#8217;s infrastructure in the Gulf<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If oil kills off marsh plants,<br \/>\nwetlands will turn to open water, putting the shallowly buried coastal<br \/>\npipelines at risk of ships strikes, storms, and corrosive salt water.
