Now, Riaz is among the artists and musicians calling for Pakistan to lift its seven-month-old ban on YouTube. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/usman_riaz_and_preston_reed_a_young_guitarist_meets_his_hero.html\" class=\"video_teaser\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.ted.com\/images\/ted\/ac625ca37085f9e8a7bdf702504934f9b5614a4e_240x180.jpg\" alt=\"Usman Riaz and Preston Reed: A young guitarist meets his hero\" width=\"132\" height=\"99\" \/>Usman Riaz and Preston Reed: A young guitarist meets his hero<span class=\"play\"><\/span><\/a>Talking yesterday to the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/503464\/lift-the-ban-on-youtube-cry-artists\/\">Express Tribune<\/a><\/em>, Riaz said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cEverything that I have learnt and achieved is a direct result of having a close connection to the online realm,\u201d says Riaz. \u201cYouTube [could] be the reason I became a TED Fellow. I would have never had a chance to speak on the TED stage or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/usman_riaz_and_preston_reed_a_young_guitarist_meets_his_hero.html\">perform with Preston Reed<\/a> \u2014 the man whose videos I used to watch on YouTube when I first picked up the guitar \u2014 if I didn\u2019t have access to YouTube.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Usman and friends have created a Facebook page called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/YoutubeAloud\">YouTube Aloud<\/a> to gather information and fight the ban.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2012, YouTube was banned in Pakistan during the furor over the film <em>Innocence of Muslims<\/em>, which many believed to be insulting to the prophet Mohammed. In early January, Pakistan&#8217;s government suggested it would <a href=\"http:\/\/dawn.com\/2013\/01\/09\/filtration-system-being-put-in-place-to-reopen-youtube\/\">lift the ban<\/a> after installing filters, but the opening lasted about three hours before being shut again.<\/p>\n<p>Riaz&#8217;s message: YouTube is too valuable for learning to be closed over one video.
