While TED2014 takes place in this spectacular city, TEDActive 2014 will be just 90 minutes away in the gorgeous ski resort of Whistler, pictured above.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">With registration just opened for TED2014 and TEDActive 2014, here are some fun facts about Vancouver and Whistler to get you in the British Columbian spirit.<\/p>\n<p>Vancouver is Canada\u2019s third largest metropolitan area, with a population of 2.3 million. It is also one of Canada\u2019s most diverse cities &#8212; 53% of residents do not speak English as their first language. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www12.statcan.gc.ca\/census-recensement\/2011\/dp-pd\/hlt-fst\/pd-pl\/Table-Tableau.cfm?LANG=Eng&amp;T=303&amp;SR=1&amp;S=51&amp;O=A&amp;RPP=9999&amp;PR=0&amp;CMA=933\">StatCan<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Originally known as Gastown, Vancouver sprouted up around the Hastings Mill sawmill and tavern, established in 1867. Twenty years later, the city was incorporated and named after Captain George Vancouver, of the British Royal Navy, who explored the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii and Australia. [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vancouver\">Wikipedia<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Some bands and musicians who\u2019ve called Vancouver home: The New Pornographers,\u00a0Tegan and Sara, Kid Koala,\u00a0Bryan Adams,\u00a0Sarah McLachlan,\u00a0Heart and Michael Bubl\u00e9. [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vancouver#Music_and_nightlife\">Wikipedia<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Stanley Park, Vancouver\u2019s largest, is 1001 acres\u2014making it 10% bigger than New York City\u2019s Central Park. [<a href=\"http:\/\/travelclub.canadiangeographic.ca\/\">Canadian Geographic<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Vancouver is sometimes referred to as Hollywood North. It is second to Los Angeles in television production and third behind New York and Los Angeles in film production. <i>21 Jump Street<\/i>, <i>Fringe<\/i>, <i>The L Word<\/i>, <i>Smallville<\/i>,<i> Hellcats, Battlestar Gallactica<\/i>, <i>MacGyver<\/i>, and <i>The X-Files<\/i> were all filmed there. [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Television_series_produced_in_Vancouver\">Wikipedia<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>In 1971,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/recent\/Vancouver-born-Greenpeace-celebrates-its-40th-anniversary\/\">Greenpeace<\/a> was established in Vancouver, and the city has its sights set on becoming the world\u2019s greenest city by 2020. [<a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/green-vancouver\/greenest-city-2020-action-plan.aspx\">Vancouver.ca<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Whistler Mountain was once known as London Mountain because of the fog at its base. The name Whistler was inspired by the unique noises made by the hoary marmot, which make their home there. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whistlersbest.com\/whistler-information\/facts-about-whistler\">Whistler\u2019s Base<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Now visited by more than 2 million annually, Whistler was basically undeveloped until the 1960s. Whistler Mountain opened in 1966 with an eye toward a bid for the 1968 Winter Olympic Games. [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whistler,_British_Columbia\">Wikipedia<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Whistler gets an average of 469 inches of snow a year. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whistler.com\/stats\/\">Whistler.com<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>When Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympics in 2010, more than 2,800 athletes were housed at the Olympic Village at Whistler. In that Olympics, Canada set the record for most gold medals won by a country in a single Winter Olympic games &#8212; an honor held by the Soviet Union since 1976 and only matched by Norway in 2002.
