And, in the case of its Relational Database Service (RDS), Amazon always stores primary data in one availability zone (AZ) but the associated backup data in another AZ &#8212; for a fee. Now that fee is getting lower. Amazon announced the price cuts in its <a href=\"http:\/\/aws.typepad.com\/aws\/2013\/02\/aws-price-reduction-rds-multi-az.html\">AWS blog<\/a>\u00a0late Wednesday, but they are retroactive to February 1, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The price for\u00a0backup storage beyond your free allocation reflects this extra replication that occurs to maximize the durability of your critical backups,&#8221; according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/rds\/faqs\/#41\">RDS FAQ.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/02\/14\/amazon-makes-it-cheaper-to-spread-your-database-around\/rds-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-610732\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"rds\" src=\"http:\/\/gigaom2.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/02\/rds.jpg?w=708\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-610732\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are the before-and-after prices of \u00a0for a small on-demand RDS Database Instance (running either MySQL or Oracle databases) in a multi-AZ deployment:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/02\/14\/amazon-makes-it-cheaper-to-spread-your-database-around\/rdsprice\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-610736\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"rdsprice\" src=\"http:\/\/gigaom2.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/02\/rdsprice.jpg?w=708\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-610736\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is just the latest in a continuing flow of pricing tweaks that Amazon unleashes.
