Google has announced that Andy Rubin, who has headed up Android for the company ever since Google bought his startup in 2005, is leaving his post. Replacing him will be Sundar Pichai, the company said Wednesday in a blog post.<\/p>\n

Pichai will continue in his role overseeing Chrome and Google Apps. It’s not clear what role Rubin will take on next for Google.<\/p>\n

In a blog post signed by CEO Larry Page, he wrote of the transition<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Having exceeded even the crazy ambitious goals we dreamed of for Android\u2014and with a really strong leadership team in place\u2014Andy\u2019s decided it\u2019s time to hand over the reins and start a new chapter at Google. Andy, more moonshots please!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Rubin leaves Android with the world’s largest share of mobile operating systems, said to be 75 percent by IDC<\/a> as of the end of September 2012. Google also announced that same month it had a total of 500 million activations of Android-powered devices, and Page announced in the blog post announcing the shakeup that 750 million Android devices have been activated.<\/p>\n
