Courtesy of: ESA<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Today\u2014March 21, 2013\u2014the much-anticipated cosmological results from the\u00a0Planck satellite have been released.\u00a0In a recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/statsandstrings.blogspot.ca\/\">blog post<\/a>\u00a0on her own website,\u00a0TED Fellow and cosmologist Ren\u00e9e Hlozek\u00a0describes why this is a big day for astrophysics and cosmology. We asked her to explain what the excitement is all about.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">&#8220;Planck is the &#8216;next generation&#8217; satellite that measures the tiny\u00a0fluctuations in the temperature and polarisation of the Cosmic\u00a0Microwave Background (CMB) \u2013 which is light that comes from shortly\u00a0after the Big Bang, and has been travelling towards us for over 13\u00a0billion years,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Planck has been operating in space since 2009, and will dramatically\u00a0increase the precision with which we can measure this radiation, which\u00a0tells us about the physical conditions of the universe at very early\u00a0times. We use this data to fit a cosmological model, to figure out\u00a0what the universe is made of, its properties and how it is changing with time.\u00a0So today is a big day because it further refines our picture of\u00a0where we came from and where we are going on the grandest scales\u00a0imaginable!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Planck results are now available at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciops.esa.int\/index.php?project=planck&amp;page=Planck_Legacy_Archive\">Planck Legacy Archive \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_73526\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 596px\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73526\" alt=\"Ren\u00e9e-Hlozek\" src=\"http:\/\/tedconfblog.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/03\/renc3a9e-hlozek.jpg?w=900\"   \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">TED Fellow Ren\u00e9e Hlozek speaks at TED2013.
