You\u2019re at the PC, with lots of important work to do. And you\u2019re going to get started on it — once you\u2019ve checked Facebook. And Twitter. Then watched a YouTube clip someone mentioned earlier, checked what\u2019s happening on eBay, and worked your way through a host of other online distractions.<\/p>\n
Sounds familiar? Then you might like\u00a0Cold Turkey<\/a>, a simple free tool which can temporarily block access to your favourite web destinations.<\/p>\n Launch the program and it first asks which sites you\u2019d like to block. You can block some popular sites — Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, eBay and more — just by checking a few boxes, while a Custom Sites dialog lets you enter URLs of your own.<\/p>\n The next step is decide how long the block will last, which can be anything from 10 minutes to a week.<\/p>\n Finally, click \u201cGo Cold Turkey\u201d, and after a quick \u201cAre you sure?\u201d check, that\u2019s it — try to visit the sites you\u2019ve specified in any browser and you\u2019ll get a \u201cnot found\u201d error.<\/p>\n Don\u2019t think you can easily get around this, either. Changing your system time won\u2019t help. Closing down the Cold Turkey processes won\u2019t do it. And if you\u2019re thinking the HOSTS file might be involved here, you\u2019re right — but simply editing that alone won\u2019t remove the restrictions (and there\u2019s no \u201cback door\u201d to regain access, either, so you need to be careful in how you use the program). You could keep trying other things, but it\u2019ll probably be easier to get on with the work you should be doing, anyway.<\/p>\n This isn\u2019t a perfect solution, of course. It can\u2019t stop you browsing sites via a smartphone, tablet, or any other internet-enabled device you might have around.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re just looking for a quick and easy to selectively block a few web distractions, though,\u00a0Cold Turkey<\/a>\u00a0will get the job done.
