It\u2019s always a good opportunity to see folks and hear about what\u2019s happening in the high tech industries and what folks are thinking about. It seems they are thinking about innovation, cloud computing and mobile technology.<\/p>\n<p>I heard a lot of speakers talk about the need to open up their technology and their ideas \u2013in terms of getting feedback from customers, getting customers to help spread the word (generally via social media), listening to what others are doing. Technology projects can no longer be done in a vacuum \u2013 because the technology outside of that vacuum changes so quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to take notes during the sessions I attended. Also I have a video of my colleague Bill Coleman talking about the MIRC\u00a0project. Our customers are restaurants. The pressure of TripAdvisor has made people want to be cleaner.<\/p>\n<p>Toro \u2013 we\u2019re just starting. We watch for comments on our products. We don\u2019t tap into open innovation and asking the world for ideas. We\u2019re working on how that applies to us.<\/p>\n<p>Tennant &#8211; We\u2019re early stages too<\/p>\n<p>How do you approach failure?<\/p>\n<p>Ecolab \u2013 We tell them that we don\u2019t expect them to succeed every time. We share stories of failures. Sometimes it\u2019s a matter of being ahead of your time. We try to learn from failure.<\/p>\n<p>Toro\u00a0\u2013 Wharton Business school professor talks about the need for performance originations and learning organizations \u2013 the question you ask relates to that tension.<\/p>\n<p>Tennant \u2013 We have a review process, which helps people get on board.<\/p>\n<p>How do you see mobility play in?<\/p>\n<p>Toro \u2013 One challenge \u2013 we think of products and projects. We were educated to define everything then freeze specs and come out with a perfect product years later. That\u2019s not the world we live in today.<\/p>\n<p>In a large company, how do you work with innovation outside of your company?<\/p>\n<p>Tennant \u2013 Must ask what\u2019s happening in adjacent spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Ecolab \u2013 We host events that lets people experience what the customers experience.<\/p>\n<p><b>Session 2B: IT | The Changing Role of the CIO (Room L100 I\/J)\u00a0 <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s IT organizations are facing a barrage of changes; Cloud Computing, Social Networks, Mobility, SaaS, etc.. Service is also playing a larger role.<\/p>\n<p>I have two rules with technology innovation:<\/p>\n<p>Any technology that is sufficiently developed will be adopted despite opposition. The question\u00a0 is \u2013 when it is sufficiently developed?<\/p>\n<p>As adoption takes place, there\u2019s a lag between start of use and value of meaningful use.<\/p>\n<p>We talk about mobile phone as if it\u2019s a new things \u2013 it\u2019s been around for 40 years.<\/p>\n<p><b>Final Keynote: <\/b><b>Jim Link, Author <em>The New Creativity<\/em><\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>When skill meets will magic happens \u2013 the same is true with creativity.<\/p>\n<p>We are getting worse at creativity \u2013 probably because we\u2019re thinking and teaching it the wrong way.<\/p>\n<p>People who are creative are:<\/p>\n<p>Curious: People who are creative are observant, studious, thoughtful. They work to know more about their field. They are always noticing things and filing them away until later.<\/p>\n<p>Inquisitive: they dig to get more info.
