(Update: Actually, it turns out folks can <em>sign up<\/em> for GCE starting at 6 p.m. PDT on Wednesday.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2012\/10\/28\/amazon-suit-shows-google-as-public-cloud-threat\/gcelogo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-577988\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"Google Compute Engine logo\" src=\"http:\/\/gigaom2.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/10\/gcelogo.jpg?w=300&#038;h=187\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-577988\" \/><\/a>Notably, Google will offer its resources in sub-hour increments &#8212; something that public cloud kingpin Amazon Web Services does not support (although other providers like Cloud Sigma and <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2012\/09\/10\/profitbricks-says-it-can-out-amazon-amazons-cloud\/\">Profitbricks<\/a> do). Users don&#8217;t have to buy a whole hour of an instance, but can buy instances by the minute with a 10-minute minimum, Google SVP Urs H\u00f6lzle, said in a<a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/05\/15\/live-blog-google-io-2013\/\"> Google I\/O 2013<\/a> session Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Other perks, per H\u00f6lzle&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/googleenterprise.blogspot.ca\/2013\/05\/ushering-in-next-generation-of.html\"> blog post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shared-core instances provide smaller instance shapes for low-intensity workloads.<\/li>\n<li>Advanced Routing features help you create gateways and VPN servers that enable you to build applications spanning your local network and Google\u2019s cloud<\/li>\n<li>Large persistent disks support up to 10 terabytes per volume, which translates to 10X the industry standard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>H\u00f6lzle\u00a0also noted that Google will offer 10TB persistent disks, something an &#8220;unnamed cloud competitor&#8221; does not offer after seven years in business. As some expected, Google also announced PHP support for Google App Engine (GAE).<\/p>\n<p>Google announced GCE at last year&#8217;s event in June, and started opening up access to select users a few months later.
