{"id":659709,"date":"2013-05-22T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-22T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/serkadis.com\/index\/?guid=0d60bfa48a156ce699541162cd01b121"},"modified":"2013-05-22T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2013-05-22T12:00:00","slug":"the-national-map-corps-volunteers-receive-recognition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/659709","title":{"rendered":"The National Map Corps &#8211; Volunteers Receive Recognition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--introstart-->Citizen volunteers are making significant additions to the U.S. Geological Survey&#8217;s ability to provide accurate information to the public.<!--introend--> Using crowd sourcing techniques, the USGS project known as <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalmap.gov\/TheNationalMapCorps\/index.html\"><em>The National Map <\/em>Corps<\/a> (<em>TNM<\/em>C) encourages citizen volunteers to collect manmade structure data in an effort to provide accurate and authoritative spatial map data for the National Geospatial Program&rsquo;s web-based <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalmap.gov\/\"><em>The National Map<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These structures can include schools, hospitals, post offices, police stations and other important public places along with data from other sources, the data currently being collected by volunteers become part of <em>TNM<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalmap.gov\/structures.html\">Structures dataset<\/a> which is made available to users free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to recognize the important work being done by volunteers, <em>TNM<\/em>C has created a <a href=\"http:\/\/navigator.er.usgs.gov\/help\/vgistructures_rewards.html#NMCorps\">recognition program<\/a> based on the number of points a volunteer contributes. Levels of recognition are displayed in the form of <a href=\"http:\/\/navigator.er.usgs.gov\/help\/Rewards\/Rewards_System\/Reward_Categories\/Reward_Categories.htm\">icons or badges<\/a> of antique catalog drawings of different and increasingly sophisticated pieces of surveying equipment. Each badge comes with a description of the item and encouragement to achieve the next level. If you have access to the Internet and are willing to dedicate some time editing map data, we hope you will consider participating.<\/p>\n<p>While some familiarity with the area that a volunteer chooses is helpful, you do not have to live near a particular place to contribute. The <a href=\"https:\/\/my.usgs.gov\/confluence\/display\/nationalmapcorps\/Home\" >tools on <em>TNM<\/em>C website<\/a>, along with ancillary information available on the Internet, are generally sufficient to edit a distant area. There are presently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/newsroom\/article.asp?ID=3545\">nineteen states<\/a> available for volunteers to choose to update structures in.<\/p>\n<p>See for yourself how much fun participating can be.
