The word is that Apple will be working more closely with Pegatron on the production of future iPhones and iPads.<\/p>\n<p>Pegatron is already an Apple partner &#8212; it made some iPhones and the iPad mini &#8212; but is set to take on a larger role, according to the report: Apple will be &#8220;dividing its weight more equally&#8221; among it and Foxconn.\u00a0And one of the products Pegatron will be making? It\u00a0&#8221;will be the primary assembler of <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/01\/10\/resolved-cheap-iphones-arent-the-future-of-apples-business\/\">a low-cost iPhone <\/a>expected to be offered later this year,&#8221; says the report.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a steady stream of reports since early this year that <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/01\/09\/how-cheap-will-a-low-cost-iphone-be-maybe-99-to-149\/\">Apple is working on a version of the iPhone whose price would make it more accessible<\/a> to a larger percentage of users who have yet to join the smartphone revolution, mostly<a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/04\/15\/what-apple-is-up-against-in-two-growing-mobile-markets-china-and-brazil\/\"> in emerging markets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons for the transition of more iOS device manufacturing to Pegatron, according to the <em>Journal<\/em>&#8216;s unnamed sources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height:15.994318008423px;\">Reaction to <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2012\/10\/10\/attempts-to-improve-iphone-5-quality-control-is-slowing-production\/\">Foxconn&#8217;s production troubles<\/a> with the intricately designed iPhone 5.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Apple&#8217;s need to expand beyond Foxconn&#8217;s current capacity.<\/li>\n<li>And perhaps most importantly: Pegatron&#8217;s willingness to take lower profits in favor of more business from Apple.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This report jibes with earlier news that <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/05\/07\/if-apple-decides-to-make-a-television-foxconn-will-be-ready-to-build-it\/\">Foxconn has been looking for ways to diversify<\/a> its manufacturing abilities beyond the iPhone and iPad, including televisions.<\/p>\n<p>Pegatron will \u00a0be staffing up as a result: it has 100,000 employees now in its home bases of Taiwan and China, but will be increasing its employee headcount in China by 40 percent in the second half of this year.
