This is what the street artist and TED Prize winner told Charlie Rose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iLVicHM3Atk&amp;feature=youtu.be\" >when he appeared on his show<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the projects I\u2019ve done it was like, \u2018Ok, I\u2018ve seen that place on the media. I want to go and see for myself,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s how I\u2019ve started all my projects; just taking a flight and going there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JR says that there is just one constant in all the places he visits &#8212; that the people are welcoming and excitedly offer to show him the city, including good places to paste. (North Korea was the one exception to this rule, he says, because there he was under constant surveillance.) It\u2019s for this reason that, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/jr_s_ted_prize_wish_use_art_to_turn_the_world_inside_out.html\" >when he won the TED Prize in 2011<\/a>, he founded the participatory art project <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insideoutproject.net\/en\" >INSIDE OUT<\/a>, which allows anyone to have their portrait printed JR-style and to paste it up with a social purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was pasting my first posters, I did it with a community in a suburb of Paris \u2026 I couldn\u2019t show up [because] I knew the police would catch me. So I had to leave the people to interact and they would answer the questions in their own way; they would make their own formula of what the art means to them. And I was like, \u2018Wow! Their explanation of it is actually much more interesting than mine.\u2019 So I kept on going this way,\u201d JR tells Rose. \u201cWhen I did <i>INSIDE OUT<\/i>, I said it\u2019s just about them &#8212; I\u2019m just a printer. When I started that, people told me, \u2018Why are you giving all your secrets away? \u2026 I\u2019m like, \u2018No, actually, the more you give &#8212; the [more] comes back.
