{"id":662040,"date":"2013-08-07T19:15:00","date_gmt":"2013-08-07T23:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/serkadis.com\/index\/?guid=7d68a7886d235b61aed1d0cf9a6fd595"},"modified":"2013-08-07T19:15:00","modified_gmt":"2013-08-07T23:15:00","slug":"news-story-prime-minister-announces-500-million-to-relieve-pressures-on-ae","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/662040","title":{"rendered":"News story: Prime Minister announces \u00a3500 million to relieve pressures on A&amp;E"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>With over 1 million more people visiting <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> compared to 3 years ago, last year\u2019s harsh winter put exceptional pressure on urgent and emergency wards.<\/p>\n<p>The new funding will go to <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> departments identified as being under the most pressure and be targeted at \u2018pinch points\u2019 in local services.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is for patients to be treated promptly, with fewer delays in <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr>, and for other patients to get the care, prescriptions or advice they need without going to <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"local-initiatives-how-extra-ae-funding-could-be-spent\">Local initiatives: how extra <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> funding could be spent<\/h2>\n<p>Hospitals have put forward proposals aimed at improving how their services work. These include improvements to both <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> and improvements to other services away from <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> so there are less unnecessary visits or longer stays in urgent and emergency wards. <\/p>\n<p>Some of the local initiatives could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>minimising <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> attendances and hospital admissions from care homes by appointing hospital specialists in charge of joining up services for the elderly<\/li>\n<li>7-day social work, increased hours at walk-in centres, increased intermediate care beds and extension to pharmacy services to ease pressures on <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> departments<\/li>\n<li>consultant reviews of all ambulance arrivals in <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> so that a senior level decision is taken on what care is needed at the earliest opportunity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"helping-ae-departments-prepare-for-winter\">Helping <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> departments prepare for winter<\/h2>\n<p>Currently, <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> departments are performing at their usual level for the summer period with over 95% of patients seen within 4 hours since the end of April. It is hoped that providing the additional funding at this stage will ensure the <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> is better prepared for the busier winter period.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister David Cameron said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>With over a million more people visiting <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> in the last 3 years, services and staff can find themselves under pressure during the busier winter period.<\/p>\n<p>While <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> departments are performing well this summer and at a level we would expect for this time of year, I want the <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> to take action now to prepare for the coming winter.<\/p>\n<p>The additional funding will go to hospitals where the pressure will be greatest, with a focus on practical measures that relieve pinch points in local services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">By acting now, we can ensure doctors, nurses and <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> staff have the support they need and patients are not left facing excessive waits for treatment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jeremy Hunt, Health Secretary said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This \u00a3500 million will help <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> departments to prepare for winter and give patients confidence that they can quickly access safe and reliable emergency care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We will do whatever it takes to make sure the best <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> care is there for every patient when they need it, and we\u2019re backing our hard-working <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> staff with the resources they need to deliver this.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"further-initiatives-to-relieve-pressure-on-ae\">Further initiatives to relieve pressure on <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr><br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-of-health\">The Department of Health<\/a> and <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/\"><abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> England<\/a> are working to relieve pressure on <abbr title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/abbr> in the longer term. A \u00a33.8 billion fund has been agreed which will focus on joining up services, so that health and care services work more closely together, keeping people healthier and treating them closer to home. Professor Sir Bruce Keogh is leading a review into the demands on urgent and emergency care and how the <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> should respond.
