{"id":68826,"date":"2009-12-07T10:33:43","date_gmt":"2009-12-07T15:33:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/rosenberg-theres-just-a-1-in-35-chance-fridays-employment-number-was-right-2009-12"},"modified":"2009-12-07T10:33:43","modified_gmt":"2009-12-07T15:33:43","slug":"rosenberg-theres-just-a-1-in-35-chance-fridays-employment-number-was-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/68826","title":{"rendered":"Rosenberg: There&#8217;s Just A 1-In-35 Chance Friday&#8217;s Employment Number Was Right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"float_right\" src=\"http:\/\/static.businessinsider.com\/~~\/f?id=d37a6c7907bc634974f18c00&amp;maxX=418&amp;maxY=281\" border=\"0\" alt=\"DavidRosenberg\" width=\"418\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s getting hard to keep track of all the different ways people are attacking Friday&#8217;s employment number.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve got <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/trimtabs-the-real-job-loss-number-was-255000-2009-12\">TrimTabs<\/a> which keeps banging the drum about the birth-death model.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve got folks talking about how it was all in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/michael-panzner-an-alternative-read-on-todays-bullish-jobs-data-2009-12\">temp work<\/a>, or the public.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are those who point out all of the people who have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/david-goldman-10-reasons-to-doubt-the-governments-rosy-employment-data-2009-12\">left the workforce<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>David Rosenberg chimes in with another: that it just can&#8217;t be right, because it doesn&#8217;t jibe with the contraction in the services sector<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>A 1-IN-35 EVENT&nbsp; <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It&rsquo;s remarkable nobody talks about this.&nbsp; The big surprise in the payroll data was <br \/>the service sector component; it rose 58k.&nbsp; But we know from the ADP report <br \/>that service sector employment fell 81k, which was fractionally worse than the <br \/>79k decline in October.&nbsp; Such a discrepancy has occurred less than 3% of the <br \/>time in the past, and each time, the following month after the big gap, there was <br \/>a convergence &#8230; with headline nonfarm payrolls swinging 100k lower on <br \/>average, which would imply a 111k decline when December&rsquo;s figure comes out. <br \/>Also take note that the +58k print in the service sector payroll was completely at <br \/>odds with the 41.6 reading in the ISM non-manufacturing employment index in <br \/>November &mdash; a figure that in the past was consistent with a -192k tally in service <br \/>sector payrolls and never before aligned with a positive number.&nbsp; Go back to the <br \/>2001 recession, and the worst ISM non-manufacturing jobs subindex was 43.9 <br \/>(right after 9\/11) and here we published a figure that was more than two points <br \/>shy of that!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So as we wonder how the headline number could only be -11k on Friday, there <br \/>were some very lumpy increases in some very non-cyclical segments of the <br \/>economy:&nbsp; <br \/>&bull; Administration\/waste management +87k <br \/>&bull; Health\/education +40k <br \/>&bull; Government +7k<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The rest of the economy shed 145 jobs and the declines were spread across <br \/>nearly 60% of the industrial base from retail, to transports, to manufacturing, to <br \/>construction.&nbsp; For some reason, we didn&rsquo;t see this dichotomy mentioned <br \/>anywhere in the weekend press.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/rosenberg-theres-just-a-1-in-35-chance-fridays-employment-number-was-right-2009-12#comments\">Join the conversation about this story &#187;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>See Also:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/david-goldman-10-reasons-to-doubt-the-governments-rosy-employment-data-2009-12\">David Goldman: 10 Reasons To Doubt The Government&#8217;s Rosy Employment Data<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/trimtabs-the-real-job-loss-number-was-255000-2009-12\">TrimTabs: The Real Job Loss Number Was 255,000<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/michael-panzner-an-alternative-read-on-todays-bullish-jobs-data-2009-12\">The Good Jobs Data Was All Temporary Workers And The Public Sector<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/TheMoneyGame\/~4\/6O5vFqTJQqc\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s getting hard to keep track of all the different ways people are attacking Friday&#8217;s employment number.
