{"id":74658,"date":"2009-12-10T10:03:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-10T15:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"tag:criminaljustice.change.org:\/\/0afef7b5003d758cc86ae38e0c9ddad5"},"modified":"2009-12-10T10:03:00","modified_gmt":"2009-12-10T15:03:00","slug":"cutting-the-cord-on-failing-anti-drug-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/74658","title":{"rendered":"Cutting the Cord on Failing Anti-Drug Ads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1639\" title=\"egg\" src=\"http:\/\/change-production.s3.amazonaws.com\/photos\/wordpress_copies\/criminaljustice\/2009\/12\/egg.png\" height=\"170\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Congress will cut the drug czar&#8217;s anti-drug advertising budget by more than a third next year, continuing a decline for the ads, which have been proven ineffective by repeated studies.<\/p>\n<p>House and Senate negotiators reached agreement on <a href=\"http:\/\/copssaylegalize.blogspot.com\/2009\/12\/great-news-from-congress.html\" >a 2010 Appropriations bill yesterday<\/a>, and the bill includes $45 million for the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, a reduction of $25 million from last year (and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/washington\/2006-08-28-anti-drug-ads_x.htm\" >less than half of what we were spending in 2006<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Several studies have found problems with the anti-drug advertising campaigns, but the best known finding is an extensive report commissioned by the Government Accountability Office in 2006. The report found that not only did government anti-drug ads fail to have an impact on drug use, they actually made use seem more common and normal &#8212; perhaps leading more kids to try drugs. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/about\/organization\/despr\/westat\/#reports\" >The full report is available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t dispute the power of advertising to influence behavior. The anti-tobacco advertising in recent years has been powerful and <a href=\"http:\/\/her.oxfordjournals.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/21\/2\/296\" >studies have shown it to be effective<\/a>. My issue with anti-drug ads from the government is that, just like our drug war, they have often missed the mark &#8212; badly. By targeting marijuana, for example, the government has lost credibility in its message against drugs that are actually dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Probably the most famous anti-drug ad in American history is the &#8220;Your Brain on Drugs&#8221; campaign pictured above. VH1&#8217;s Best Week Ever posted the 10 funniest anti-drug ads ever. &#8220;Your Brain&#8221; made <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bestweekever.tv\/2008-2-5\/the-10-funniest-anti-drug-commercials-in-advertising-history\/\" >the list<\/a>, but some are much worse.
