At the time, the most plausible explanation for the physical damage was that the packaging designed to protect the machines during transit was insufficient. The crazy flashing? Well, that&#8217;s anyone&#8217;s guess.<\/p>\n<p>Add to the mix an already-lengthy waiting period for order fulfillment and you get a fair number of frustrated customers wondering what they paid $1,700 for.<\/p>\n<p>Over on the Apple Support forums there&#8217;s a mammoth (80+ pages!) <a href=\"http:\/\/discussions.apple.com\/thread.jspa?threadID=2212682&amp;start=0&amp;tstart=0\">discussion<\/a> raging about the very issue. As though that&#8217;s not enough, one disgruntled iMac owner created <a href=\"http:\/\/imac.squeaked.com\">this<\/a> web site for reporting and tracking other instances of damaged 27 inchers. <span id=\"more-37557\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gigapple.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/27-imac-fault-reports.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37576 aligncenter\" title=\"27 iMac Fault reports\" src=\"http:\/\/gigapple.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/27-imac-fault-reports.png?w=531&#038;h=204\" alt=\"\" width=\"531\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday Apple did what it so very rarely does &#8212; apologized.\u00a0Really: &#8220;We apologize.&#8221; Wow. I almost fell off my chair.<\/p>\n<p>The apology (I can&#8217;t stop shaking my head in wonder as I type that word) was delivered by an Apple spokesperson to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-13579_3-10414512-37.html\">CNET<\/a> and reads, in all its\u00a0succinct\u00a0glory;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The new iMac has been a huge hit and we are working hard to fulfill orders as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience or delay this may cause our customers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, there was no mention of the shattered glass problem. Not a word about blinking displays. But c&#8217;mon, you didn&#8217;t expect a full and frank confession did you? This <em>is<\/em> Apple.
