{"id":82335,"date":"2009-12-15T00:21:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-15T05:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/techdirt.com\/articles\/20091211\/1540517317.shtml"},"modified":"2009-12-15T00:21:00","modified_gmt":"2009-12-15T05:21:00","slug":"white-house-wants-input-on-public-access-rules-for-federally-funded-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/82335","title":{"rendered":"White House Wants Input On Public Access Rules For Federally Funded Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ostp.gov\/cs\/home\" >Office of Science &#038; Technology Policy<\/a> remains one of the few White House operations that seems to actually have a good grasp on the internet and what it means for various other aspects of governance.  That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s good to see them asking for input into <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.ostp.gov\/2009\/12\/10\/policy-forum-on-public-access-to-federally-funded-research-implementation\/\" >what the administration should do in terms of requiring public access for federally funded research<\/a> (thanks to Lee for sending this over).  There&#8217;s been a big debate over this for years.  Given that a significant portion of academic research is federally funded, it is immensely troubling that the results of much of that research is locked away in extremely expensive journals.  There has been a good push over the years for requiring federally funded research to be accessible by the public, and OSTP is now looking for views into how to create policies that would achieve that goal.
