The uptick in executions is less important, partly because there was a de facto moratorium on executions nationwide for four months in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Even Texas and Virginia are cooling to the cruel practice of capital punishment. According to the report, Texas averaged 34 death sentences per year during the 1990s and Virginia averaged six. This year, Texas had nine and Virginia just one. Among MSM outlets picking up today&#8217;s report from DPIC were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/nation\/article\/0,8599,1948904,00.html\" >Time<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/lanow\/2009\/12\/california-death-row-swells-as-execution-verdicts-drop-nationwide.html\" >LA Times<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5jI0Alg-_jieAdVpIrPjWwmkDwJ7A\" >AFP<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/CRIME\/12\/18\/death.penalty.use\/\" >CNN<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/12\/18\/us\/18death.html\" >the NY Times<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/news\/more?um=1&amp;cf=all&amp;ned=us&amp;cf=all&amp;ncl=dgUQiICNcAXqBwM23CosLlNWZqTlM\" >many, many more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven states considered legislation in 2009 to abolish the death penalty, and there&#8217;s momentum going into 2010. I&#8217;ll be posting more in the next few weeks on the prospect for abolition in various states and around the world in the year ahead.
