{"id":96398,"date":"2009-12-23T12:54:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-23T17:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/techdirt.com\/articles\/20091221\/1731437454.shtml"},"modified":"2009-12-23T12:54:00","modified_gmt":"2009-12-23T17:54:00","slug":"what-will-the-recording-industry-be-blaming-for-all-their-problems-a-decade-from-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/96398","title":{"rendered":"What Will The Recording Industry Be Blaming For All Their Problems A Decade From Now?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the very end of an NPR story about the decade since Napster there&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=121690908\" >an amusing quote from Eric Garland of online music tracking firm Big Champagne<\/a>, where he says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><br \/>\nA decade from now, executives may be longing for the days&#8211;when they could blame piracy for all of their problems.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed.  &#8220;Piracy&#8221; makes for an easy &#8212; if totally incorrect &#8212; scapegoat.  The reality is far different.  As we&#8217;ve seen over and over again, those who learn to properly use file sharing to their advantage don&#8217;t see any &#8220;problems&#8221; from file &#8220;piracy,&#8221; but actually see it as a huge opportunity.  That, alone, makes it clear that piracy has never been the problem, only a failure to adapt.  And yet, as we&#8217;ve noted repeatedly, the industry itself is actually <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20090617\/1138185267.shtml\">thriving<\/a>.  So that raises a separate question.  A decade from now, what will industry execs be blaming their problems on?
