No matter how many albums in your personal music library, no matter how many Pandora channels you set up, there’s going to be a time when you want to listen to just one track and have no way of accessing it. Sure, you could pay the 99 cents to iTunes, but what if you just want to listen to it once? Happens to me all the time, especially when I want to play along with the song on guitar. Two excellent services for me have been Imeem, which recently became part of MySpace Music, and Grooveshark. Just type the song name and grooveshark.com into Google, and you can probably find the track you’re seeking. They now have a BlackBerry app which can do just that and more.
The key feature to the Grooveshark BlackBerry application is the ability to find songs and albums that you can listen to instantly. It’s like having an entire MP3 library right on your BlackBerry. While I love the Pandora BlackBerry app, I do like the ability to have more control over my music. Grooveshark offers exactly that. Beyond finding single tracks and albums, you can create playlists that you can access from your computer (or a friend’s) or your BlackBerry. Plus, it has a Pandora-esque streaming radio station based on the bands you enjoy.
Another excellent feature is the ability to store songs on your BlackBerry for offline listening. I always tout the virtues of caching systems for people who live in cities with underground transportation, or areas with spotty coverage. The interruptions can be a nuisance, so anything that has the ability to cache moves to the top of the list.
The only disadvantage of the Grooveshark BlackBerry app is that, unlike Pandora, it will cost you. BlackBerry app users must be VIP members, which costs $3 per month. Clearly, that’s not something everyone is willing to pay. But if you want the ability to listen to the music you want, when you want it, it might be a worthy fee. You can check out more information and download the app at http://mobile.grooveshark.com/phones/blackberry.
