Backup your BlackBerry over the air with Aurkon

Yesterday, in discussing the Reload Software: 552 error, I pleaded with readers to backup their devices. I myself fell victim when I got an application error, left with a dead BlackBerry and no backup. In the comments, DavidB left a suggestion: backup your device wirelessly. It makes it that much easier. Today we’ll look at one such application, Aurkon. It’s a quick, easy, and, most importantly, free application that makes backing up your BlackBerry a no-brainer. Literally.

The application works in a simple manner. Just download and install it, and then it runs in the background, backing up your information on the fly. You don’t have to do anything, really. Just let it run. It will automatically send out your information in batches, and will only do it when your BlackBerry is otherwise idle. It sounds like they have everything covered.

Of course, you’ll be sharing personal information with Aurkon. It backs up entries from your contacts, calendar, tasks, memo, and information from other potentially private applications, so you probably want to know what Aurkon does with it. They use SafeCopy to back up all information. You can actually sign up for a free account, and then pair your SafeCopy and Aurkon accounts. This will allow you to see the information you have in wireless backup. You’ll want to check out SafeCopy’s privacy policy, which states that they “will not sell, rent, trade, or give away your email address or other contact information to any other organization.” So it seems that they might do that to your non-identifying information.

When you need to restore your information, just download Aurkon to your wiped device, login to your account, and click Restore. Seriously. All that information the application sent while you went about your other business will come rushing back to your phone.

If you’re comfortable with Aurkon and SafeCopy handling your personal data, you can get Aurkon for free at BlackBerry App World. It is available for most BlackBerry models.
