One theme we constantly revisit on BBGeeks is the idea of your BlackBerry as a way to keep your life in order. Among our many geek reviews are a number of productivity and organizational applications. The idea is that while your BlackBerry can do this out of the box, that’s not enough. If you have to click five or six times to get to certain applications, chances are you’ll lose focus and forget about it. I know I do. My computer is set up to get to everything I need with the fewest possible clicks, and for years I’ve tried to implement a similar system on my BlackBerry. Cooper recently reviewed SuperQWERTY, an application that brings you to all of your most frequently used applications with just one keystroke. They’ve updated the application now, so that you can do even more with it.
We got a huge response to the SuperQWERTY application the first time around, so I figure that these upgrades will be an even bigger reason to check it out.
Refresher
For those checking out SuperQWERTY for the first time, and who don’t want to read through Cooper’s initial walk-through, here’s the short-short version. SuperQWERTY is essentially a quick launch application that uses your keyboard. Once you download the app — and turn home screen dialing off — your Q key launches SuperQWERTY. Here you can assign any application on your BlackBerry to any key stroke.
This includes every key combination on your BlackBerry. This means you can assign an application to “a,” “A,” and “*”. This should cover most of your application launch needs. Not only can you access SuperQWERTY by pressing Q on the home screen, but you can access it from any other application by pressing Menu and selecting the SuperQWERTY option.
Browser bookmarks
For most people, 70 shortcuts is plenty. Does anyone have 70 applications loaded on their BlackBerrys? I’m an app junkie and I’m not even close to that. All those options might have seemed superfluous in the first version of the app, but the new version brings a new feature to the table: the ability to add bookmarks as shortcuts. Uh oh. Considering all the sites I frequent on my BlackBerry, adding browser bookmarks means that 70 shortcuts might not be enough.
WiFi and Bluetooth toggle
With SuperQWERTY you can launch your manage connections feature with just one keystroke. But from there you have to toggle your mobile network, WiFi, and Bluetooth on and off. With v1.2.0, you can toggle WiFi and Bluetooth with one keystroke. I really hope they add mobile network toggling with the next version. It would make me more apt to switch off my radio when going underground, as to save a little battery.
Bug fixes
As with most new software, SuperQWERTY had a few bugs in the initial release. Like all good developers, MMMOOO went through and fixed many of them in the new version. Here’s their list of bug fixes:
- Fix the bug that symbol will lose in edit mode.
- Fix the bug that new installed apps always appear in the end.
- Fix the bug that BBbloglauncher cannot launch on some models
- Fix the bug that BBTran cannot launch on some models.
- Fix the bug that Shazam cannot launch on some models.
- Fix the bug that Ubertwitter cannot launch on some models.
- Fix the bug that BBweather cannot launch on some models
- Fix the bug that Nice Office cannot launch on some models.
While a few of those apps are a bit obscure, UberTwitter and BBWeather are fairly common. That’s nice. Also, the fix that moves your newly installed applications into alphabetical order, rather than the end of the list, is welcome. I remember Cooper complaining a bit about that one.
Trial and upgrade
First, SuperQWERTY has extended its trial version to seven days, so you have longer to evaluate the software. Smart move on their part. I think after a week with this application, I couldn’t help but buy it. It would be like going back to Hotmail after using Gmail.
They’ve also added an upgrade function to the application. This doesn’t help current SuperQWERTY users, but it will help anyone who downloads v1.2.0. Next time they release an update, you can download right from the application.
Get SuperQWERTY
If you want one-click access to any application on your BlackBerry, you can get SuperQWERTY for $3.99. You can also check out MMMOOO’s other applications. They have some quality stuff in there.
