The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic just got a heap of snow dumped on it. For some, it’s a major inconvenience. For others, depending on the severity, it’s a day or two off of work. There’s a group among us, though, that sees snow and thinks of nothing but skiing. Sometimes I wish I were of that ilk. Perhaps then I wouldn’t turn into such a curmudgeon during snowfall. If you fall among the ski-loving folk, you might want to check out this Blackberry app. It’s called OnTheSnow, and it seems like a pretty good value for anyone who likes to travel and ski, or just get information on nearby resorts.
Looking for a resort? You can search the application by resort name, by region, or, if you have a functioning GPS, by proximity. You can track up to 16 different resorts, finding information about whether the slopes are open, the surface conditions, new snow, and base depth. Yes, I took these terms from the product description, because I’m ski-illiterate.
The application integrates with BlackBerry Maps or Google Maps to show you the layout of the resorts. You can also get resort-specific information on number and type of lifts, what types of trails it has, and, of course, a full weather report.
Late last year we featured a different BlackBerry ski app, BerrySki. That is a more comprehensive application, it seems, but it also costs a lot more. The base price is $4.99, and that covers just one resort for one season. You can get OnTheSnow for a one-time fee of just $2.99, making it an excellent value for people who want just the basic resort information. It works with just about any BlackBerry model running OS 4.2 or above.
